It took some time to find a NAS with all the features I wanted for a reasonable price. The Thecus N0503 is new on the marked, has an Intel Atom processor with 2GB ram, so it combines all the NAS features with a fast speed.

Thecus is a supplier of professonal Network Storage Systems but also makes some smaller and cheaper NAS devices. The smaller devices however have a lot of professional features.

You can use three 3.5" harddisks in RAID 5 to keep your data secure, in case of a single harddisk failure. The combined capacity will be 2/3 of the total amount of GigaBites.

You can also install up to five 2.5" harddisks. Use more complex RAID settings or combine different RAID settings in one unit and even use less power.

The installation is as easy as this: open the box, slide your harddisks inside (no screwdriver required), turn on the NAS and configure your drives using a well-build webapplication.

Thecus has a good website with alle the downloads for (new) manuals, drivers, firmware and extra features.

I use the N0503 with three 3,5" harddisks and the NAS makes less noise than a desktop computer. It works great with Apple computers and opening files is almost as fast as with a local harddisk.

I recommend this product to everyone who likes to spend a little more on a NAS.
In return you get a great (semi-)professional product to work with.
