A Great Read, August 24, 2011
This review is from: Their Fathers Lied (Paperback)
Being from a family that includes quite a few war veterans, I
have always had an interest in reading about life on the
battlefield. James Thurbin's book, Their Fathers Lied, was
the most graphic and accurate depiction I have ever read on
the subject.
This novel made me feel as though I was on the front fighting for my life with these young men. I felt as though I knew every one of the characters personally. I cheered their triumps and shed tears when they were so cruelly taken away.
I had a tremendous amount of fondness and respect for the hero of the novel, Billy Mercer. He was a man that I'm sure most men would look up to and want to emulate and most women would find irresistable. In spite of the fact that he was a bit rough around the edges, his heroic feats allowed him to rapidly move through the military ranks. Billy had a sensitive, tender and loving side that was brought to light when he fell in love with the beautiful Melissa. Unfortunately, this love led to his downfall.
I could see this book as a success on the big screen. It has the perfect combination of the violence that is war, sex and romance. It really made me feel extremes in emotion which is what a good book should do. I didn't want it to end.
I do hope Mr. Thurbin continues to write. I will certainly be anxiously awaiting his next novel.

The Great War, March 3, 2010
This review is from: Their Fathers Lied (Paperback)
A very interesting book from many perspectives. I expected a hard bound book and received a glossy paperback. I am not sure if the author paid for the printing of this book or not , but it felt like it.
The descriptions of the battle scenes were pretty gory and you felt like you were in the trenches with these men. The relationship between the main character and his male friends was very strong, even as he became more senior and higher in rank. His main handsome friend and he were almost like lovers.
The only sex was of a necessary nature to satisfy the needs of healthy men and had no bearing on love.
This read like a first book and with more experience I feel this author will develop some depth.
A good read that does keep the interest for those of us who do a lot of "Great War" reading.
The development of the main character and his friends was thorough and meaningful. Did a good job.
