The hit, on a low-level mobster, is performed under a Chicago expressway by two hired guns, one of whom wears a ponytail. Also killed is a witness, a teenaged black gang member whose girlfriend escapes notice. She goes into hiding. So does the ponytail. Hunting them both is the mob, the dead youth's gang, Chicago cop Joe Morrison, last encountered in State Street , and ambitious journalist Holly Stryker, who smells a good story and goes after the divorced Morrison. The mob cast includes Angelo Franconi, in love with a boss's daughter, trying to be "made" and secretly spying for the Feds. A side plot about a shady character's seeking a corpse for a scam adds to the body count. Whittingham so effectively details the mean streets and projects of the Windy City that the accumulated grit nearly obliterates the predictability of the action. While the cop, the reporter and the gangsters are believable, fully developed characters, the demons that drive Angelo to his tortured life of split allegiances aren't fully probed--an ironic lack in a book that seems to go on too long.

When 13-year-old Rayfield Tees--his attention momentarily diverted from the willing Latrona Meeks--views a Mob hit, his life ends on the spot, the victim of a jumpy gunman. Latrona, wanted by both the cops and the Mob, slips into the Chicago underground. Detective Joe Morrison must find the Meeks girl, which means forging an alliance with a gang chieftain named Solo. Running parallel to Morrison's investigation is the Mob search for the incompetent hired gun, an FBI undercover agent's affair with a Mob boss' daughter, and a suburban schemer's plan to buy a corpse from the Mob so he can stage his own death. Whittingham's first Morrison novel, State Street (1991), was, tough and thoroughly entertaining. This one is a small disappointment. There's too much going on and too many characters. Any two of the major plot lines would have made a lean, compact novel. The result is too little Morrison and too many unworthy peripheral characters. Still, Whittingham has the makings of a first-rate series here, and this installment, though a minor misstep, deserves support. Wes Lukowsky

Their Kind of Town,

Gritty and riveting. The author knows his way around the streets of Chicago and the underbelly of society. If he keeps this up Mr. Whittingham will attain the spot in the hard boiled crime genre that could have gone to the late Eugene Izzi.
