From Library Journal

Armstrong is a former learning disabilities specialist who became disenchanted with the concept of disability. His alternative concept of learning differences, or unique learning styles, is modeled on Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences: linguistic, logical-mathematical, spatial, musical, bodily-kinesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal. Believing that schools have failed to develop children's special abilities, he suggests different ways that parents can help children to learn any subject according to their own style and to develop self-esteem. He also discusses testing and alternative methods of evaluating learning. Parents, teachers, and mental health professionals will find much of interest here.Shirley L. More About the Author

I've been a writer and speaker for twenty-five years, focusing on the diversity of ways in which people learn and grow. I like to read (my favorite writer is Jorge Luis Borges), paint, meditate (I do mindfulness meditation), and play Scrabble (even though my wife usually beats me). I'm particularly excited about my new book (out in May 2010) called Neurodiversity: Discovering the Extraordinary Gifts of Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, and Other Brain Differences. It suggests that we think about brain diversity in the same way we think about biodiversity and cultural diversity. I used to work as a learning disability specialist and was disheartened by the negative labels we throw at children. I believe we need to honor and celebrate the uniqueness of each learner. My book Neurodiversity focuses on the strengths and abilities of people with mental health labels, including autism, dyslexia, ADHD, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and intellectual disabilities. I hope that you buy Neurodiversity, and tell other people about it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST for any parent with a "learning disabled" child., May 8, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: In Their Own Way (Paperback)
Mr. Armstrong helped us find our child's learning style and our 12 year blossomed from an insecure, discouraged and failing student to a confident, enthusiastic young person who now finds joy in learning. This book shows that any child CAN learn, and shows the reader how to make it happen.

5.0 out of 5 stars There is a newer book, but still great., February 14, 2010
This review is from: In Their Own Way (Paperback)
Taking a break from the book. The reason-I'm reading a library copy and I must get my own! I will be underlining and sharing and need a copy or 2 (one for, you guessed it, a teacher). I can hardly wait for my daughter to wake up, so I can try out some of the ideas. She is a "spatial" genious and graceful. She is having trouble learning to read. She will love kinetically, twisting her body into the alphabet. She will love drawing pictures to help her with words. I forsee great improvement because of this book. Every educator should HAVE to read it. Thank you Dr Armstrong.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource, December 15, 2009

This review is from: In Their Own Way (Paperback)
This book was an excellent resource for understanding your child's learning style. It also helped me understand the problems with the school system which lead to misdiagnosis of learning disabilities. I highly recommend this book!
