5.0 out of 5 stars A GREAT record from an obscure 50s vocalist, June 18, 2007
This review is from: Thelma Gracen (Audio CD)
A great record from an obscure 50s vocalist. Thelma Gracen's sophisticated approach to jazz vocals is hip and relaxed. But not sleepy or careless. An Anita O'Day, Chris Connor/June Christy kind of feel with a bit of Beverly Kenney thrown in for good measure. The backings are a small combo throughout, somewhat like the Helen Merrill sides at the time, but better... a bit warmer overall. Georgie Auld/tenor, Lou Levy/piano, and Barney Kessel/guitar. 12 cuts including "Solitude", "I'll Remember April", "Night & Day", "Out Of Nowhere", "Let There Be Love", and "I'm Yours". There's also a cut of "I'll Never be The Same", but go listen to Jimmy Rowles sing/play it on the Getz album,"The Peacocks". Go get this lady and listen. You'll add another CD to your "GREAT" list.
