Biography

As influential as he proved to be during the final decades of his lifetime, it appears that Thelonious Sphere Monk (1917-82) has only gained greater stature in the years since his death. Once considered too eccentric and complex to be appreciated by listeners and other musicians, Monk has become a standard of excellence, as both composer and soloist, for those who seek to extend the jazz ... 5.0 out of 5 stars Monk's mind totally exposed November 22, 2008
By Nico
Format:Audio CD
Monk was larger than life, and did not need extra players to full up his sound. Thelonious's touch was evident whether he was all alone or fronting a big band. With that said, I love Monk best when he was acting or reacting off other like minds in a small tight group. But, this playing alone business can be a treat, we hear Monk's method to the madness without other instruments getting in the way.

Orrin Keepnews was on a roll, and obviously meant to keep himself there. For the fourth record since Monk was essentially booted off Prestige and picked up by the new kids in town at Riverside, Keepnews had to follow two trio records of covers and Brilliant Corners, which pitted Monk against an amazing backing band for what may be his best album. With some commercial success being felt, but a sense of not wanting to repeat, where do you go? The answer was a record of piano solos, something Monk had done for the Vogue label in Europe (but which was likely unheard in the US at this time), but never here. That said, the solos on his sessions (such as "Just a Gigolo", "Solitude" or "I Surrender, Dear") were always lovely, and a full record of these seemed like a good idea. It turned out to be a great one.

Monk doesn't bring much new to the table, to be honest, outside of some standards he clearly loves, two reprises of two of his best originals, and a free-form blues called "Functional" that is so much more than that. Still, each track has its own surprises. For instance look at the album opener: he'd covered "April in Paris" before (and would again, many times), but this version seems both truer to the original than most interpretations, and somehow stranger. As he had on the Ellington covers record, Monk keeps the melody light, but takes it apart a bit, putting in pauses where there weren't any traditionally. This leads into (I Don't Stand) a Ghost of a Chance (With You). That song was a famous solo piece in the forties by Lennie Tristano, and Monk seems to go out of his way to brand it as his own, this time obscuring the melody so much that you have to remind yourself what song this is.

5.0 out of 5 stars Orrin Keepnews produced. . . need I say more? July 23, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Orrin Keepnews is an American writer and Jazz producer. If you see any body of work in the music industry where he is involved, buy it. He's 91 and going strong. God bless him. He produced these tracks of Mr.Monk.
