Book Description

5 and upK and up
Every Thanksgiving, a turkey disappears from Felicia Ferguson’s farm. And this year, Thelonius Turkey is the only turkey left. So with only a week to go before Thanksgiving, Thelonius won’t sit around waiting to be stuffed and roasted–he’s not going to the chopping block without a fight!
So begins one determined turkey’s hilarious campaign to save his own neck. This zany Thanksgiving comedy will have readers rooting for Thelonius all the way to the very end–where they will be as surprised as he is with Felicia's holiday plans.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2–This lighthearted story centers around a turkey who is certain that he is about to become the centerpiece of the Thanksgiving meal. With only a week before the holiday, Thelonius is suspicious when Felicia provides him with three square meals each day and plucks another tail feather or two (to better see his size, he believes). So, he announces to the rest of the farm animals, Felicia's GOTTA GO! and gets a good round of applause. Cow helps out by mucking up the plumbing for Felicia's shower, leaving her udderly surprised. The geese, who know how to read, follow the pinch me instructions tacked onto Felicia's back. The pigs disappear only to be found napping in her bed. Still, the woman remains friendly, and on the big day wants to take Thelonius to a new block in town, which he is certain means the chopping block. But, of course, it's not. This cheery story ends happily when all of the animals and Felicia gather for a nice vegetarian feast. Reed has illustrated her work with watercolor and collage images. Feathers, burlap, seeds, toys, and even packaged turkey dinners float among the childlike drawings. Combine this tale with other misadventures or stories of misunderstanding, such as Eve Bunting's A Turkey for Thanksgiving (Houghton, 1991), for a nice holiday treat.–Roxanne Burg, Orange County Public Library, CA

5.0 out of 5 stars Gobble This One Up!, November 6, 2005

Like TAPPLETONS THANKSGIVING, this one should be a read-aloud every year before the meal begins. The artwork is an appropriately goofy mix of realia, typography, paints with lively movement on the page, but best of all there are TWO recipes at the end of the book--Sweet Potato Casserole and Thelonius' Feather Cookies (plus lots of inspiration for feather-based art, not to mention making hats with Thelonius Feathers. Keep this one in your turkey roasting pan so you remember to read it every year! Teachers will love it as an alternative to pilgrims and parades. Best of all, kids will like knowing that they are NOT munching on Thelonius.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny and Fun, November 25, 2005
We gave the book to a niece and everyone thought it was a beautifully done, creative spin on Turkey day. The kids loved the real pictures combined with the drawings. Very clever.

This book really relates to the little people interested in the subject of Thanksgiving. It's PERFECT for a fall read-aloud to children or by children. The art work looks like some very creative little hands helped to design the book. Words are all over the pages in many different sizes to add interest and appeal to young audiences.

Thelonius the turkey's countdown to Thanksgiving and all his antics will entertain and delight your children year after year.
