This thematic catalogue is the product of inventories of all manuscripts containing music of the troubadours and trouvères. Melodic incipits of extant melodies are presented in intervallic order, and each incipit is provided with cross-references to appearances of the same or related melodies found in other manuscript sources. Specific references to appropriate philological handbooks also are listed with each melody. The indices include cross-reference tables for the melodies with text handbooks, including those by Pillet-Carstens, Raynaud-Spanke, and Linker. A second series of indices presents the order of appearance of melodies within the individual manuscripts.

Introductory materials provide descriptions of each of the manuscripts, or chansonniers, its contents, and its relationships to the other collections. An in-depth bibliography related to the study of the chansonniers concludes the introductory materials. This catalogue is an invaluable resource for scholars and performers working with the medieval monophonic lyric and related polyphonic repertoires such as the ars antiqua motet.

After a long career involved with medieval song (Southern Methodist University) in which she undertook transcription and documentation of roughly 4,500 melodies, Mayer-Martin died in 2009, before completion of her goal of sorting and cataloguing melodies based on their incipits. Fortunately, she had a partner in the endeavor. Dorothy Keyser joined the project in 1994, and began creating a digital database, inputting the melodies as a series of intervals expressed in semitones. This catalogue is the result of their combined efforts. The indexing and cross referencing are extraordinary, offering an important resource for scholars and performers working with the medieval monophonic lyric and related polyphonic repertoires. --Book News, Inc.

About the Author

Dorothy Keyser is presently serving on the faculty of the Music Department of the University of North Dakota as Associate Professor of Music History. Her research interests include 13th century secular monophony, especially the work of Adam de la Halle; orate and literate traditions; music and the brain; musical form in film; and the nature of the musical intelligence. Her academic background is diverse, including a B.A. in Theater (University of Texas at El Paso, 1971), an M.A. in Theater (Southern Illinois University, 1973), an M.M in Voice Performance and Opera Production (Northern Illinois University, 1983), and a Ph.D. in Musicology (University of North Texas, 1997. Dissertation title: Oracy and Literacy in the Music of Adam de la Halle: the evidence of the manuscript Paris, Bibliothèque national f.fr. 25566 ). Her teaching experience, also diverse, includes Music Appreciation, Music History (both surveys and seminars), Music and Culture, Introduction to Graduate Students in Music, Introduction to the Theater, Beginning Acting, Costume History, History of the American Musical Theater, Applied Voice, and Fundamentals of Speech.
