Muriel Shows us How Friends Really Blend!,
By C.T. STRICKLAND, JR (PLEASANT GARDEN, NC United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Theme for Two Friends (Audio CD)
Muriel Anderson gets credit for being the first to introduce me to classical guitar. Though I'd heard other guitarists, mostly men, Muriel opens up your understanding of classical guitar by her various techniques, and one only has to listen to recognize her thorough mastery of this instrument that I dearly love, that being the guitar. I am introduced to the best of both worlds when another set of strings, the cello, is blended to make a very soulful combination. Not only are the pieces well composed and performed by she and Celloist Julie Adams, but the timing, and interweaving of these two fine sound pieces make up the ingredients for a recipe that will wet your appetite for classical strings and have you returning for more!Though every track is rich with smoothness as each musician glides skilfully through the mix of tones ranging from brilliant, crisp vibrations to mellow overtones on to deep, bass notes that strike with the power of thunder, I find two that I especially savor. "Living Out A Dream", and "Calm Before the Storm", both set a beautiful mood that hints each note is on it's own predetermined course as each sound flows after the other in a rhythm that is virtually flawless. Both instrumentalists have their unique styles, yet both are very complimentary to each other. By the time you listen to the entire album, you are convinced that not only the instruments are friends, but the performers have become friends as well! The Cello maitains a certain steadiness that is only enhanced by the precise, yet smooth, and relaxed decoration of notes that only fingerstyle guitar can achieve. Through this album, award-winning female guitarist, Muriel Anderson has demonstrated just how well two musical friends can blend with just the right touch of mastery!
