Book Description

May 2, 2007
The Civil War is over. She wants to get far away from her cruel former mistress, but the world beyond the plantation is a frightening, unknown wilderness. He has fought the good fight in Union blue; now he must fight his way home through a hostile, defeated South. Delia was born a slave and then physically and emotionally battered all of her seventeen years. Finally free, she strikes out on her own, making friends with a little band of former slaves and a handsome black soldier, Ezra Johns. Certain that God has brought Delia into his life, Ezra wonders how he can help her realize her true value. Delia's heart feels drawn to Ezra, but she struggles for feelings of worth and happiness. A long and arduous journey takes this rag-tag band of survivors through a violent flood, bitter southerners, hunger and exhaustion under a blazing summer sun, and even a murder charge and near-lynching. With the help of two humble white farmers, they at last earn train fare to Boston. Back in his home city, Ezra completes his education. However, he discovers that despite his service to his country, black men still must struggle for respect and a place in American society. His only hope for a promising future is to go West. But now that Delia has found her own success in the city, will she leave her new found happiness, and go with Ezra into the wilderness? A story of courage and resilience in the face of fierce opposition and the triumphant dignity of the human spirit

About the Author

Louise M. Gouge earned her BA in English/Creative Writing at the University of Central Florida in Orlando and her Master of Liberal Studies degree at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. Louise is the author of six novels and to her credit, she is the recipient of several writing awards, including the Inspirational Readers Choice Award for Historical Fiction, the Road to Romance Reviewer's Choice Award, placing second with the prestigious American Christian Fiction Writers Book of the Year, first in the esteemed Inspirational Readers Choice Award, and garnering a rare four star review from Romantic Times BOOKclub Magazine. While writing Christian fiction is her primary occupation and labor of love, Louise is also an adjunct professor of English and Humanities at Valencia Community College in Kissimmee, Florida. Having received her advanced education in middle age, she tries to inspire her younger students to complete their own education early. For her older students, Louise hopes that her experiences prove that it is never too late for them to work toward their dreams. (Her first novel was published after she turned fifty!) In the classroom, she attempts to live out her Christian faith both in words and in action. Louise has been married to David Gouge for forty-one years. They have four grown children and five grandchildren. Her favorite Bible verse is "He shall choose our inheritance for us" (Psalm 47:4), a testimony to her belief that God has chosen a path for each believer. To seek that path and to trust His wisdom is to find the greatest happiness in life.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Awesome READ!, December 8, 2009
This review is from: Then Came Hope (Paperback)
From the moment I purchased this book, I could not put it down. It did not matter that there were 50 chapters or over 300 pages, this book was action packed from the first page. This book will have you wanting more, from one page to the next. You'll be bursting with anticipation. This book kept my full attention; and it never got dull...

You will fall in love with the characters, especially Delia and Ezra. I really hope she does a sequel to this book. I haven't read a book this good, since reading Stephanie Perry Moore's "Wearing My Halo Tilted."

I love this book and recommend it to anyone age 14 and up. It's amazing how Mrs. Gouge incorporated GOD's love for a people. Great job!!

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm sitting there beside myself, September 19, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Then Came Hope (Paperback)
This book is action packed with every page. A "sit on the edge of your chair" type book. From the first page, the story flowed at a fast clip.

My God is real to me, as real as He is to the characters Louise M Gouge portrays in this book, Then Came Hope: the second book in her newest three book series. One of these folks doubt God and His activity in her life while many others demonstrate their great, unwavering faith in Him. Louise shows both sides of the coin in this wonderful book of Hope in God, Hope that He is there for them, with them and beside them on their journey.

My husband and I read the book aloud together. At times, the story was so touching that neither of us could read a word aloud for the emotion welling up in us. We'd have to take a break before continuing. As I sat there reading, I saw myself in the actions and the feelings that were shared as the story unfolds.

I say this book is a good read for teens on up, male and female alike.
