5.0 out of 5 stars Whimsical Book that Captures the Joy of Halloween, August 25, 2009
This review is from: And Then Comes Halloween (Hardcover)
This is a beautiful, whimsical book that captures the joy of halloween for both the children and the adults reading the book! It follows a little boy as he dreams up what he wants to be for Halloween, makes his costume and then, goes out trick or treating. It captures the essence of what's so appealing about Halloween to young children, not the candy, but the imagination and fun of dressing up as anything you want to be--from a pirate to a pilot. After Christmas, Halloween is my children's favorite holiday! I'm always on the lookout for beautifully-told books that introduce preschoolers (ages 2 through 5) to the holidays and rituals that we celebrate. I'll be reading this book to my preschooler in the weeks leading up to Halloween!

5.0 out of 5 stars Halloween the way it should be, August 14, 2009

This review is from: And Then Comes Halloween (Hardcover)
This book combines beautiful words with beautiful pictures. It captures the feel of Halloween Days gone by with the anticipation of Halloweens Future. It is poetic and dreamy. I can't wait to read it to my children when autumn comes and Halloween is just around the corner! This is a great book for grandchildren as well!

I'd heard this childrens' Halloween book was very good, but I was pleasantly surprised to find a debut author and noted illustrator collaborated in such a wonderful new approach to a childrens' book!

The prose brings back memories to most adults and is very authentic to children. The graphics / art is so very well matched to the story.

A MUST BUY for children of all ages (3-93) and a great Christmas gift.

Don't let this one slip away. And Then Comes Halloween

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent prose and illustrations, August 28, 2009

The descriptions in this book invoke the feeling of anticipation as Halloween approaches. The vocabulary is very descriptive and does not talk down to children. Pre-schoolers will enjoy the beautiful illustrations and adults will enjoy reading this book aloud.

All too often Halloween books for kids focus on the candy and scary costumes, but Brenner's lyrical language recalls the innocence and fun of Halloween. The book's a joy to read to students, and the artwork is perfectly paired with the words. One of my favorite read-alouds each Halloween season.

Incidentally, the author does school visits in the Pacific Northwest for a very reasonable amount. He came to our school and was super-flexible in working with different grade levels and classes. More importantly, he really seemed to be there for the kids and to help them become better writers, not just to sell his books. I can't recommend his visits highly enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Fall!, September 15, 2010
This review is from: And Then Comes Halloween (Hardcover)
My Mom bought this book for my son, who's two, mainly because the author has the same name as my Dad :). It has quickly become one of my son's favorite bedtime books. The prose are wonderfully reminiscent of everything that makes Halloween-time so much fun when you're little, and the illustrations offer wonderful details to endlessly pour over. I like that it also has a cozy, innocent quality without being saccharine. I'm sure we'll be reading this for a long time to come!
