3.0 out of 5 stars i'm not so sure new is always better, but it is good, March 11, 2003

"orangevinyl" (Memphis, TN United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Then Is the New Now (Audio CD)
when i first saw this band, i just flipped my wig. immediately thought to myself, "what an experience it is to be in the presence of their performance." it was a show in tallahassee, fl with stavesacre and that show just melted me like butter. from that point i went on to buy denison's first 2 albums, holding hands at 35000ft and world reknown for romance. then this album came out and i thought..... what happened?!?
now, i know the band went through a rough spell between world reknown and then is the new now... where all their equipment was stolen. now these guys have been touring like crazed dogs and i truly salute them for that. after being totally entranced spiritually and musically by world reknown for romance i eagerly anticipated the new album. something of this album doesn't quite measure up to the same crew i remember seeing live. the songwriting didn't seem quite as triggering and compelling, and to some degree seemed rushed and not completely thought out. the sound of this album is more pop/rock and less melodic. the musical progression and art they've created in these 3 albums has been great, but i felt the songwriting lacked sorely on the new album. but for all those who truly enjoy this album, please seek out and find the album, World Reknown for Romance. some albums have a way of just turning on the switch, and that one is just magical. for those new to Denison Marrs, these guys are a great bunch and put out some great melodies and compelling songs, and they are almost always playing somewhere (generally FL) so see them when and where you can.

4.0 out of 5 stars Near mastery, December 6, 2002
This review is from: Then Is the New Now (Audio CD)
Denison Marrs practically nailed spacey, textured rock with their second release, and this third album finds them nearly doing the same with crisp guitar driven pop rock. Gone are most of the guitar effects, and in their place are some buzzing riffs and almost dirty bass lines. Melodies and choruses are the highlight, such as on "What Life Is" and "The Real Ones", and when the band finds a hook and works in interesting verses, they're amazing. Where they lack is in the simplistic lyrics and the songs where the verses aren't interesting enough ("This Is All The Time We Have", "Rescue Mission"); they seem to go on auto pilot from time to time. The ultimate outcome, however, is a rewarding, inspiring pop album.

5.0 out of 5 stars SO PASSIONATE!, October 26, 2002
By
This review is from: Then Is the New Now (Audio CD)
Denison Marrs does an excellent job showing their passion for their music. Eric Collins' voice shines with beauty and passion. The guitars and drums ring with a beautiful passion for God. I can't believe these guys aren't that popular. They need to be in every American household. As an aspiring songwriter I try to look for good songwriters. Eric Collins is an excellent one. He especially shows his message of hope on "What Life Has". This song is beautiful. That is the only reason I bought the album. I had never heard any of the other songs, but all of the songs are good. "What Life Has" shows us humans that there is meaning to our lives, and how beautiful of a gift life is. Spread the message, Denison Marrs is awesome, and they need to be heard! There is hope in this life. His name is Jesus Christ! I hope this cd will reach millions.
