I have to give this CD 3 stars only because there was no notice anywhere on the CD cover mentioning that this CD contains new recordings of his old songs instead of being a true "Greatest Hits" collection CD. In fact, the sticker on the cover leads you to believe otherwise. None-the-less, the recordings are extremely close to the originals and he does include the original "Paint Me A Birmingham" which makes it an ok buy.

Then and Now?

Country, true country, at it's best.

This is the ulitimate celebration of love, life, and loss, brought to us by one of the few True Country voices on radio today. This C.D. contains old and new; however the stories of love, loss, friendship, turning points, Lessons Learned, and Time Marching On, are timeless classics. It is back to back stories from a young excitable boy in If the Good Die Young, to the different man he is today in Used to the Pain. A voice so real, and honest only he can sing these songs. You will feel lonely and strong at the same time while feeling the worst of loss and the best of love. The new track if I Don't Make It Back will ring true to many, many generations and perhaps bring them together in a way never dreamt of. And who among us have never felt the loss in Used To The Pain? Tracys voice lets you know love may be lost but life does go on and it doesn't have to be so hard. In the end it screams "think of me" for all people in the world. Think of all you may have loved and lost, embrace the pain with him, and remember them with your own Birmingham. He encourages you to celebrate that you loved once, and will again. This one of a kind voice will have you pushing the repeat button over and over. Once again, true country at its most honest. TLIFC

As a long time country music fan I have often felt like Tracy Lawrence was the most under rated artist of his time. After, suppling the music industry with 16 number one songs and even more top tens radio refused to give him the air time he had earned with his hard work and dedication to his music and fans. With the release and success of " Birmingham " I was estatic with the long overdue attention Tracy was finally receiving from the media. Upon hearing of the impending relaese of a new album "Then and Now" on Oct. 18 I couldn't wait to hear the magic I knew Tracy would deliver. However, not even I expected the Honesty and Purity of the already unique voice we have come to know and love.
The first trak on the album "Used to the Pain" is one of two new releases on the album and has that classic T.L. sound. Without a doubt, this is destined to be one his signature songs. The second new release and the third trak is one that is destined for greatness "If I Don't Make it Back". WOW! If you are in need of a good cry this one will certianly do it for you. The raw emotion of Tracy's voice and the touching lyrics of this song puts all in a place too many of our neighbors have been in all to recently. From here, there are a number of previously released classics that Tracy has re-recorded. It is amazing for me to hear these songs again even better than before. The level of maturity Tracy's voice has reached has raised the bar for any future recordings. Thanks for the memories Tracy! Hey don't forget to check out all of Tracy,s music at [...].

I have been a Tracy Lawrence fan since the early 1990's. I have seen his live performances many times during the past decade and I own ever CD he has released.

But let me tell you....this new CD is a bit of THEN and some NOW.

Can you imagine....All of your Tracy Lawrence favorites are combined on one CD. You can actually go back in time with Tracy and reminisce as you hear this CD. You'll remember the memories of where you were and who you were with the first time you heard these songs.

There are two new songs on this CD. "Used To The Pain" will reassure you that even if you've loved someone and lost them that even if you think you can't possibly get over them and live a normal life, that one day you realize that you can actually go thru the day without thinking of them. "If I Don't Make It Back" could easily be a real situation that many people have probably gone thru. When someone dear to you is going away and afraid that they may not make it back, one close to them may make promises to ease the other's mind. What would you do in that situation? Listen to the song and see what a real friend might do. The two new releases on this CD may be Tracy Lawrence's greatest hits ever.

If you have never heard these songs, now is the time to purchase this CD so you will have memories of your own in the future when you play or hear these hits. I definitely rate this CD 5 stars. It would definitely make a great gift for any country music lover. Purchase this CD and you will not be disappointed. It's absolutely fantastic. TLIFC

If you are not a big Tracy Lawrence fan and you just "like his singing," don't waste your money on this CD. The CD for you is, "The Very Best of Tracy Lawrence." If you ARE a big fan like me, you have to have both!! True, this "Then and Now" Collection is deceiving and should be clearer about all the re-recordings on the cover, I didn't realize they were re-recordings till I was several songs into the disc. They are so close to the original recordings that I feel the record label wasted their money in the studio because of the exact licks recorded several years ago. Don't get me wrong, there are some differences, but only noticeable to hard core fans with an ear for music and musicians familiar with the originals. I think it's cool to hear the new takes on the songs and Tracy's voice is noticeably different if you are listening for it. "Can't Break it to my Heart" has a cool dirty guitar outro you won't hear on the original but it's reminiscent if you've heard this song performed live. The guitar sound in "If the Good Die Young" is a little edgier than the original.
If you love Tracy Lawrence you need "Then & Now: The Hits Collection" and if you want to hear even more hits with their original recordings remastered in 2007, you also need "The Very Best of Tracy Lawrence."

There are no words to describe just how wonderful this cd is. I love all his songs. The new one (If i dont make it back) went straight to my heart. I went to see him in concert just the other night and when he was singing the end of the song he took his hat off. I had tears, goosebumps ect. He doesnt just sing these songs he puts his own heart into them and you hear it in everyone. He and his music are full of respect, values, morals ect. If you're looking for the real thing he is it. Country music has changed so much, it is hard to find a artist who is really country at heart. I am already waiting for the next album. I have not taken this new cd out of my cd player yet.Again words can't say how wonderful this cd is,i just love it so much.

Everytime I hear a Tracy Lawrence song it teaches me something about life, makes me laugh, and sometimes makes me cry. Tracy Lawrence is one of a kind and this album showcases most of his greatest works. His new songs, "Used to the Pain" and "If I Don't Make it Back" are definitly worthy of being considered some of his best. If you have ever lost a loved one or have the slightest idea of how it feels, "If I Don't Make it Back" will reach out and touch your heart. I reccomend this album to all music lovers and it is a neccessity for country music fans.

The first album of Tracy Lawrence I bought was 'I See It Now'. After that I've searched my record store high and low for his previous records as well as the ones after that. Although I own all of his works now, I still can't resist myself from getting this one. A great single effort to admire almost all of his big hits. Can't wait for his next album :-)

Sure, you haven't heard much on the charts from Tracy Lawrence for a few years ("Paint Me a Birmingham" almost seemed like a fluke). But just listen to the tracklist on this album; are there any songs on here you've never heard? Aside from the 2 new tracks, probably not. That's because many of these songs have become a mainstay on radio playlists--even a decade after they were released.

Tracy Lawrence has one of the most unique, most touching voices in country music. A bit twangy at times, he still manages to convey so much emotion into a lyric that you can't help but swoon. And he sure knows how to choose songs (he even co-wrote a few of these classics); tunesmiths such as Bobby Braddock, Mark Nesler, Kenny Beard, and Paul Nelson (among many others) are all featured in the writing credits. He's even picked songs by lesser known writers, such as alternative singer Elbert West, or up-and-comer Bobby Pinson (who's touching "If I Don't Make It Back" will leave you breathless). The other new song, "Used to the Pain," is solid country gold (as Shooter Jennings recently sang). The point is, Lawrence knows a good song when he hears one, and has a voice made to sing pure country music.

THEN & NOW is a stellar collection by a guy who's becoming a country legend. Not a current hit-maker (although, with the surprise success of "Birmingham," he may become one again), he has established himself as one of the most played, most recognized artists in country music. With a repetoire full of country hits, a voice made to croon, and even a true honky-tonk lifestyle (but that's another story), Tracy Lawrence is pure country music. This album is all the proof you need.
