Book Description

November 18, 2002
Washington, D.C. is well known for its expansive mall and world famous monuments, but relatively little has been published about the districtís historic neighborhoods, where residents have lived since its selection as the nationís capitol in 1790. This volume compares rare vintage photographs with contemporary views and paints a fascinating historical portrait of the dynamic neighborhoods that support the growth and prosperity of the nationís capitol. ÝÝThen and Now: Washington, D.C. includes images of U Streetís nightlife, produce and fish markets along the waterfront, the prestigious Congressional Cemetery of Capitol Hill, popular drinking holes on Pennsylvania Avenue, Orville Wrightís groundbreaking test flight in 1909, and Georgetownís renowned Dodge Mansion radically changed over the years. These photographs, many of them never before published, shed new light on D.C.ís rich cultural, social, and architectural heritage. ÝÝ

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating New Twist on Then & Now, May 24, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Then & Now: Washington D.C. (Paperback)
This is a great new twist on the usually plain Then and Now books; these authors used current tourists to recreat old vintage shots, and covered all parts of the city, not just the much repeated Mall aspects. A Great read!
