5.0 out of 5 stars Then Sings My Soul
Then Sings My Soul (Special Edition) by Robert J. Morgan is a delightful collection of 150 hymns and the stories behind them. This book is a joy to read. Morgan's writing style is welcoming, at times humorous, and certain entries reminded me of Paul Harvey's "The Rest of the Story." Each hymn gets two pages--one for the sheet music and the other for the hymn's background...

3.0 out of 5 stars Great book, but much the same as earlier edition
Because I really enjoyed the original Then Sings My Soul by Robert J. Morgan, I was very excited to receive the special edition from Booksneeze sometime in November. Obviously, it has taken me a long time to review this one, for many reasons. For one thing, my husband stole it for December sermon preparation. I can see how it would be very good for that purpose...

5.0 out of 5 stars Singing Praises for Then Sings My Soul,
This review is from: Then Sings My Soul Special Edition (Paperback)Then Sings My Soul Special Edition
Then Sings My Soul: Special Edition
The latest in a series of books related to the stories behind our favorite hymns, THEN SINGS MY SOUL: SPECIAL EDITION, is every bit as enjoyable as his previous books. Robert J. Morgan (Then Sings My Soul series, Red Sea Rules) is a favorite author of mine, so I knew I was in for a treat when I chose this book. This is not a book to just sit and read, but one that you may slowly savor.
This collection of stories about 150 Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, and All-time favorite hymns would be an excellent gift for the book lover who is also interested in music, history, or trivia. Considering that I love all three...plus books...you can be sure this is one I will often grab on those days when you just want to wrap up with a blanket, a warm beverage, and the chance to let your imagination run. This is not simply a recitation of boring facts and dates, but a satisfying glimpse into the songs that are the background of our lives.Visualizing the lives of the people, or the events that triggered the emotions expressed in these beloved hymns gives me a greater appreciation of them. Many songs I have known all of my life, but never knew the story behind are included. Now I have an even greater appreciation for these beloved hymns.

5.0 out of 5 stars Then Sings My Soul (Special Edition) by Robert J. Morgan,
This review is from: Then Sings My Soul Special Edition (Paperback)Then Sings My Soul by Robert J. Morgan (Special Edition, Thomas Nelson, 2010) is a collection of 150 stories about both popular and not-quite-so-familiar hymns. This collection gathers from the author's previous two versions of this title and his book Come Let Us Adore Him to form a special edition book.
I really like how this book is formatted. Each page turn reveals a new hymn and brief background article. When opened to any given hymn, the left facing page contains the actual music and lyrics and the right facing page has the hymn title, year published, a corresponding verse (which I loved reading), and the author's researched article.
This collection includes basic hymns many churches use, but I was thrilled to see other types of hymns, (of the more upbeat and gospel variety) like Leaning on the Everlasting Arms and Sweet Low, Sweet Chariot included as well.
The articles were very informative while staying concise. Often the information leaned more towards describing the author's past rather than the hymn's history, but the author's background can give insight as to the meaning of a song. It seemed that more information was given on the authors of the lyrics rather than the composer of the music, but the composer background was included with several articles. Each page turn brought several interesting facts about each hymn, the circumstances of the time periods, and the authors - a history-lover's dream!
I do think it would be interesting to include an index of research sources so that if any reader would like to know more about a particular hymn, he or she could look for more in the specific sources the author used. This information may be available elsewhere and I am just unaware.
Though typically reserved for different genres, I feel the term "page-turner" really fit this book. The articles were so intriguing and the author's writing style interesting while staying real, I easily wanted to keep on reading to discover the story and faithful motivation behind the next hymn, and the next, and the next. With the author's generally lighthearted tone and insightful reporting, Then Sings My Soul: Special Edition offers a great read and resource for anyone interested in music, history, and Scripture.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing book of behind the scenes stories,
This review is from: Then Sings My Soul Special Edition (Paperback)Did you know there is a 2nd stanza to our national anthem, The Star Spangled Banner? I recently had the opportunity to review an incredible book by Robert J. Morgan. It is called "Then Sings My Soul: Special Edition" and it tells the stories behind some of the most well-known and beloved hymns of all times. He explored the stories behind some of the best-loved hymns and discovered fascinating accounts of tribulations, triumphs, struggles and hope - ordinary people who connected with God in amazing ways, sharing their experiences through song. Complete with over 150 devotional style stories about various hymns and composers, this book will keep you enthralled for hours as you learn the history behind the beloved hymns that have spanned generations.
5.0 out of 5 stars Be Still and Know,
This review is from: Then Sings My Soul Special Edition (Paperback)Then Sings My Soul, by Robert Morgan, in short is a hymnal meets history book meets devotional book. I love this book! Sweet hymns such as All Creatures of Our God and King, He Leadeth Me, Praise to the Lord the Almighty - on and on, have been like honey for my soul lately. I never knew that Charles Wesley wrote the hymn, And Can It Be, and that Martin Luther wrote A Mighty Fortress is Our God. I thought that those men were just historians and theologians. I was wrong - really wrong. The hymn that got me though was the sweet hymn, Be Still My Soul written by Katharina A. von Schlegel. As the devotion states, not much is known about this lady yet her words are so powerful and poignant.
Be Still My Soul, the Lord is on they side. Bear Patiently the cross of grief or pain; Leave to they God to order and provide. In every change He faithful will remain. Be still my soul, thy best, Thy heavenly friend thro' thorny ways leads to a joyful end.
What an encouragement for my weary soul. As I busily work on wedding plans, as I continue to adjust back to life in America, as I meet with friends and family, as I heal and rest and decompress, I'm learning to leave it all to God and let HIM order and provide. What joy I have in knowing that HE is faithful in every change - and man, I have a lot of change happening! And what peace I have knowing that at the end (and even during) this crazy journey - God brings joy through the pain and the healing.
What a joy to read and play through this book. If you play the piano and/or love hymns - this is a GREAT book to add to your collection. Now I am gearing up to play all the fun Christmas hymns included and loving that this book is now sitting on the piano in my future home that we'll get to enjoy together in less than a month!!
4.0 out of 5 stars Then Sings my Soul.. One page at a time,
This review is from: Then Sings My Soul Special Edition (Paperback)I have just finished up reading a book, from BOOKSNEEZE, that is titled, Then Sings My Soul, by Robert J. Morgan. Talk about a powerful book of musical history.. In the 310 pages of this "history" book of songs, you will find short, but heart warming, and inspiring histories of how the songs were written, and why they were written in many cases. The front and back covers, drew me into the very first pages, because they were soft, warm colors of peacefulness, and it just called my name, as I began to read what histories the author had compiled.
I found the content to be very readable, considering the size/ weight of the book, However, the rough edges of the pages, even thought they might bring a sense of age, became more of a hinderance, as they were uneven in how they made my hands feel when holding the book. I did not care much for that part of selecting the format of producing Then Sings My Soul..
I would say, just the histories of long standing classics, have blessed my reading times, and now, I can go thru my days, singing to the songs of this book, with the included musical scores, knowing that my soul is lifted up , and blessed with such a wonderful gift of writing..
I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze.com book review program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own, and are truthful.
5.0 out of 5 stars Then Sings My Soul is a must have for your personal library,
This review is from: Then Sings My Soul Special Edition (Paperback)I received a compliementary copy of this book and I am glad to have it! I like everything from the torn page edges and feel of the book to the stories that are included with each hymn. I found myself finding not only some of my favorites but a couple that I have not heard in a really long time. This is definitely a book that the entire family can refer too. Would make a great gift too.
5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book and Keepsake,
This review is from: Then Sings My Soul Special Edition (Paperback)I was recently sent a complimentary copy of the book "Then Sings My Soul: Special Edition" by Robert J. Morgan from Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of the Booksneeze book review program. The opinions listed below are my honest opinion of the book.
In "Then Sings My Soul," Robert J. Morgan has compiled many favorite Christmas, Easter, and other famous hymns and the stories about how the writers of these wonderful songs came to write them. The book is beautifully done and each page has the actual song on one side and then the story of the writer's life and how they came to write the song. It is a wonderful inside look at many favorite songs sung in churches and around the world today. I found it inspiring to read the stories behind the songs I have sung for years. It makes the songs mean so much more when you hear the background of how the words and music came about. The words really come alive to you after hearing how these songs of praise to our Lord were written. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves music and wishes to know more about the hymns we sing. It is a wonderful teaching tool you could use in Sunday School or other areas as well. I will keep this book for years to come to share with others the meanings of all the wonderful songs we sing around the holidays and all year long.
5.0 out of 5 stars Then Sings My Soul Special Edition by Robert J. Morgan,
This review is from: Then Sings My Soul Special Edition (Paperback)I love singing. I love singing in the shower, in the car on the way to work, in the car on the way home, over the tv at random moments and in church as part of my worship. I've been singing since I could make noise. Because I love to sing, I automatically love music. My love for music had me jumping at the chance to review this book.
Each song in Robert J. Morgan's special edition gets two pages. One page has a hymnal style version of the song, and the other has information regarding the song. Each explanation page starts with a verse in the Bible that the song is related to, either as inspiration or as a verse one thinks of while singing the song. Then, there is a brief background of the writer, along with an explanation of the known inspiration for the song. Historical items are discussed and intertwined with the explanations.
While this book could have gone too cutesy with the song explanations, it instead keeps it moving without making things overly emotional. Anyone who loves church music will love this book. I highly recommend it to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Interesting Book for the Music Lover,
This review is from: Then Sings My Soul Special Edition (Paperback)This book is very interesting in that it gives a little story behind the song of how the song came to be written. The book includes the music, lyrics and stories for each of the 150 songs in the book. This special edition includes both Christmas and Easter songs as well as some patriotic songs and old hymns, some of which are included in the first two editions. The book also includes three indexes - one alphabetical by title, the second alphabetical by the first line of the song and the third alphabetical by the author/songwriter - so that you can easily find the song for which you are looking. I would definitely recommend this as a gift for the music lover in your life, especially if they like old church songs. It's an interesting read.
5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book!,
This review is from: Then Sings My Soul Special Edition (Paperback)Whenever the hymn, It is Well with My Soul, is sung during a worship service, I can't sing along without imagining the author, Horatio G. Spafford, standing on the deck of a ship as it passed over the very spot where his four daughters had only weeks before lost their lives in a shipwreck. The lyrics from Spafford's famous hymn, "When peace like a river attendeth my way, when sorrows, like sea billows roll..." are rich with meaning to me, because many years ago, I learned of the tragic event that inspired their writing.
Robert J. Morgan understands the difference that knowing the story behind a hymn can make, and that's why he penned Then Sings My Soul, a rich compilation of the stories that inspired over 150 well-known Christian hymns. Morgan's book contains the sheet music of each hymn accompanied by a one-page story which explains how the song came into being. The book itself is beautifully designed and features not only attractive cover art, but also contains pages with an unusual deckled edge, which provide the look and feel of an antique volume of writing.
Then Sings My Soul would be especially meaningful to musicians or worship leaders and also to anyone else interested in learning more about the history behind some of the church's favorite hymns. Morgan's book would serve as a helpful resource in many settings and in many ways--individuals could use it to enrich personal worship, parents could share a story with their children each time they gather for family devotions, or teachers could incorporate material from the book into classroom lessons. Morgan writes each story in an engaging, conversational tone and provides a wealth of interesting facts which help to bring the message of the hymns to life. I have thoroughly enjoyed Then Sings My Soul and would not hesitate to encourage you to add a copy to your family's library.
