Killer,
By Graveyard Scum (the vortex) - See all my reviews
This review is from: And Then You'll Beg (Audio CD)
Like a demented funhouse ride constantly in danger of careening off the tracks, And Then You'll Beg is an orchestration of insanity. It's pure tight experimental death metal weirdness, a landmark in the genre. Cryptopsy really rises above their own reputation on this one, formidable reputation though it is. It's tight but raw and noisy, retaining spontaneity through the most technincal changes; while the parts may seem strung together randomly, deeper analysis reveals a mockingly eclectic flow. The vocals remind me of earlier Kataklysm - many have mourned the loss of Lord Worm, but DiSalvo's psychotic, ultra-scary ranting fits this album perfectly. Flo's weird swinging beats and insane blasts tie together the lurching rhythms and fluttering, atonal leads, and when he drops into a groove the whole thing swirls down into its vortex. This is one of those rare masterpieces of death metal that doesn't come around often, an album you can listen to until you've got the whole thing memorized but somehow you never get tired of hearing it.

Sludge hammer to your head retardedly amazing!,
This review is from: And Then You'll Beg (Audio CD)
This album is a death metal ground breaker. Anyone who says less either has no idea what they are talking about in music, or is retarded. Being a drummer/percussionist myself, i have studied music for over 7 years, and i can only stand in awe of these musicians. Flo is phanominal, and is the best drummer in the business. Eric is probably the best bassist i've ever heard to, with licks so complicated they confuse the most skilled bass teachers around. John is also one of the best guitarists ever, with some of the most crushing riffs and the most amazing solos in metal history. The singer, Mike D is brilliant with a voice of brutality and skillful range. If you are a fan and havent heard Lord Worm is returing to the band on the next album. Although mike D is amazing I am very glad for this, as i am a big fan of lord worm.
Anyway, your just plain stupid if you don't buy this album.

DEATHMETAL AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL,
By a gamer "?" (home) - See all my reviews
This review is from: And Then You'll Beg (Audio CD)
Lets be honest this is as good as it gets.Forget the [bad] bands like THE "MODERN"Metallica,Slipknot,Mortician and so on...This is definitely the best death metal album I have heard. I first got Blasphemy Made Flesh and it was pretty decent, but this is extraordinary. This guys know what they are doing. They are going beyond the concept of simple riffs by creating true polyphonic compositions. This sounds like Bach's music in a deathmetal version.Just listen to the guitars interacting with the bass in a quasi-contrapuntal manner. The vocals???Forget the vocals!!!!the music in this cd stands on its own.I think this guys should do some album with no vocals, its not that I don't like them;they are very good but i just cant get enough of the music.Bass and Guitar lines :amazing and hyper technical,Guitar Solos: superb. With some tracks in other metal cds you kind of get bored after a while because they make very few tempo changes and its just fast, fast and fast, but Cryptopsy handles the tempo changes in a great way. Some of the songs are 5 or 6 min long and they feel like 1 min because they keep your attention at all times instead of making you dizzy with the same tempo and riff going over and over. I'm a music major so I know the difference between [bad] commercial music and REAL music. Many famous bands don't even get close to these guys. This band should be a kind of role model for starting ones.Cryptopsy shows that a band can be extremely brutal, technical and musical at the same time. You think Morbid Angel or Suffocation are the most technical bands???Well listen to this cd and you'll think it twice.WARNING:THIS CD IS FOR PEOPLE THAT LIKE HIGH QUALITY METAL IF YOU WANT SOMETHING ORDINARY LOOK FOR SOMETHING ELSE IF YOU WANT THE BEST YOU FOUND IT.

AND THEN YOU'LL BEG...To hear this CD again!!,

Cryptopsy's latest is simply stellar. I was totally blown away the first time I heard this. I mean my jaw dropped! This is almost the sickest music my ears have ever listened to (Sorry, but Suffocation will always be #1 with me.) The guitars and drums are flat out amazing, and ultra-technical. There are so many time changes in one song, it will make your head spin. The drums on this CD are INSANE! Flo Mounier has to be one of the fastest drummers behind a kit. His double kick drum work has to be some of the fastest I've ever heard (almost as fast as Sandoval). As for the guitar and bass work, I must say that I only wish I could play stuff like this, I am speachless. These have to be some of the most insane riffs I have ever listened to. Now for the vocals, and I have to say that I like them. You people will just have to get over Lord Worm's departure. Sure he had one of the most original styles out there, but it's time to face the fact that he is gone. I think DiSalvo does a fine job. He may not have the gutteral vocals, but when you hear his style, you know you are listening to Cryptopsy. Honestly, yes I do think his voice is more hard-core sounding, but I think it kind of fits. But anyway, this CD should be in your collection if you consider yourself a fan of death metal. I was very pleased to add this one to my collection. So should you! Later

Brutal yet BRILLIANT!,
By Frank (Bronx, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: And Then You'll Beg (Audio CD)
Cryptopsy are probably the most talented bunch of musicians to ever grace the music world. This album is nothing short of AMAZING! Where to begin....... Let me start by saying Flo Mounier is the greatest drummer of all time. This guy has insane speed never heard of before. At times the drumming sounds too low but you could still hear every snare hit. I just dont know how a man could remember everything he does when its this technical. Every song on this album is just a masterpiece of drumming skill by Flo. This guy makes even the old time greats like Neal Pert look bad. The guitarists are godlike as well. Jon the lead guitarist has really matured into one of the greatest ever. We Bleed at around 5:15 has a incredible solo which very few in my opinion could touch. I have no idea how Jon could be blessed with this ammount of talent. Alex Auburn filled in for cryptopsy after Miguel Roy left and he is great as well. Eric the bass player is great too...... with a cool bass riffs throughout the album. Can't forget DiSalvo. This guy is awesome but now theres news hes leaving and this is terrible news but with talent like cryptopsy's its hardly a loss. Screams Go Unheard is a Brutal masterpiece with riffs ranging from 4:30 in the song to 6:00 that would make your ears bleed. Please buy this album if you like death metal or any extreme metal. There is not one bad song on this album and it deserves to be heard by everyone. EVERY aspiring musician should challenge themselves to play this good even though its not possible. BUY IT!

Mind-blowing!,

You gotta be CRAZY to give this album anything less than 5 stars! Either that, or you're too picky when it comes to vocals. Not everyone is a Craig Pillard, Lord Worm, or Frank Mullen. But Mike's effort on this album and the last is strong and fits the music PERFECTLY. Anyhow, these guys still push the envelope of death metal with a technical massacre of innovative riffs and the fastest blast beats physically possible. It might take several listens to decipher the complicated and unorthodox riffs, but once you do, "And Then You'll Beg" won't leave your stereo for a long time.

Extreme Technical Domination,
This review is from: And Then You'll Beg (Audio CD)
This is definitly one of the best Death Metal albums i've ever heard. Flo continues to dominate life with his earth shattering doublebass skills and combined with Levasseur and Auburns sick lead this is a must have for the Elite. Secondly Mike disalvo adds so much more than the terrible pronunciated gutterals of Lord Worm.

Cryptopsy has such an uniqueness to their music and yet i haven't heard such originality from another band, yet. If you love their previous albums, specialy the debut "blasphemy made flesh" you'll either but dissapointed with "Then you'll beg" or you'll just noticy the difirent but still love the music... I for one, chose the second choise. All hail cryptopsy!

Unassailable morbid thrash,
By Jeremy Ulrey "Bangyrmfhead" (Austin, TX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: And Then You'll Beg (Audio CD)
Screaming for vengeance like it's the last death metal album that will ever be recorded, "And Then You'll Beg" makes no concessions to reason or constraint, just laboring frenziedly to produce a bewildering cacophony in your auditory canal. It can't be said that there aren't bands capable of matching Cryptopsy's pure intensity, but none have the technical chops nor pristine production this Canadian quintet thrive on. And no band since Suffocation has managed to cram this many riffs into five minute-plus songs without a permeation of repetition.Slipping seamlessly from riff to riff, "...And Then It Passes" comes roaring out of the cage with the snarling ferocity of a hopped up wolverine. The song, and indeed the album, occasionally slow the proceedings to brief thrash passages, but even then they appear no more than musical stepping stones over the torrid River Styx for which the band seem Hell bent. Following the strands of progress on this album is like chasing a speeding Ferrari on a moped. Cryptopsy just refuse to color within the lines. |
