A longtime advocate for freedom of speech, Theo Van Gogh made many enemies on all sides of the political spectrum. In the morning hours of November 2nd, 2004, he was shot, stabbed and killed in a city street in Amsterdam. The killer was arrested by police, after a short manhunt and two shoot-outs in the city, in which a police-officer was also wounded. When asked if he might be killed for speaking his mind: "Who would kill the cheerful village idiot?"
