I really enjoyed this book. I was happy that It was easy to understand Sheed's deep philosophical explanations of the great dogmas of the Church. It was highly recommended by Patrick Madrid on Open Line: Thursday Edition and I can see why. While it is great beginners, I anticipate going back over this book again and again over the years.

It starts out with the basics such as why one should even desire to study theology and how to understand what exactly is meant by "spirit". It also includes The Trinity, Creation, The Fall, Redemption, Moral Virtues, The Sacraments, The Eucharist, The Mass, and others. Sheed concludes with Death and the End of the World. He goes through each topic thoroughly, building logical explanations that take you on a the journey of the Church teachings. The sections are broken up in small parts that can easily be referred back to and be read in short sessions. Sheed repeatedly encourages the reader of the importance that all theological books should be accompanied by the reading of Scripture.

This book has helped me learn about Church teaching but more importantly- it has helped me to come to understand Church teaching.

This Angelico Press reprint is beautiful. I like the layout: the size and style of the font, the page breaks, and the size of the book.
Lastly, it has a beautiful cover image that my children and I really appreciate!
I have enjoyed the conversations that have emerged from my children's questions and comments of the cover artwork.

This is a great addition to my library.

As an adult convert to the Catholic faith, Frank Sheed explained some very difficult subjects with ease and grace. His writing style and liberal use of analogies made the book a pleasure to read. I now feel closer to God and am able to articulate my faith to family and friends in a way I was not able to do before. Thank you Angelico Press for providing this wonderful resource.

Fairly simple language and sentence structure for a very complex subject. I have a friend who wanted to learn more about GOD, and decided to read St Augustine's Suma Theologica. Quite naturally he was not nearly up to the daunting task of reading an understanding such a tome. However, I found Theology for Beginners to be a fine primer for understanding the three persons of GOD, and their separate functions ( as well as any mortal can discern the powers and functions of a timeless deity ). It is not a large volume, and I intend to read it again for better comprehension. A good buy. NGG

This book, 'Theology for Beginners' by Frank Sheed, is recommended by Daniel Burke in his book, 'Navigating the Interior Life: Spiritual Direction and the Journey to God', as being part of the needed preparation before beginning spiritual direction. Being a relatively recent convert to Catholicism I'm hungry for spiritual instruction, but I also remember a "beginning" course in theology taken at a Protestant college many, many years ago! So with some degree of trepidation I bought this book... and then was delighted to find Sheed's presentation both easy to understand and enjoyable to read.

This book is an excellent source for studying dogmas of the Church, but it is not, however, a book to be read straight through. As the author eloquently stated, "This book is not planned as a hand-gallop over the field of revelation... Slow careful thinking... will pay dividends later." So I agree with, and pass on, this suggestion: read a portion, let it roll around in our heads for a while, make it our own, then read some more another time. Just don't give up!

I'm glad I came across the recommendation for this book, and I certainly pass that recommendation along to others.

I am new to the Church (less than 12 months) and English is my second language (I am really new to the Theology and I hope my below comments make sense).

This is really a well written book to cover the very difficult topics without using metaphysical terms and definitions such as matter/ form, substance/ accident, essence/ existence, etc... For example, the explanation of "person" (soul and body) or the transubstantiation are nicely explained without using such technical terms. It covers a lot of important topics, and the chapters are logically arranged so that the earlier chapters will support later chapters. Each chapter topics can be further studied by reading more specific books. This book helped me better understand the same topics covered by the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

It's about 240 pages long, and I was able to read the whole thing during my 5-day travel to Mexico (and I am a very slow reader!). I know I will have to re-read many chapters again to better understand the contents not because of how it is written but because of many topics are covered in this book.

Theology for Beginners by F. J. Sheed is really fantastic! I liked it because it was very well written. I also really enjoyed the section entitled What the Sacraments Do. I think it was my favourite.
