1.0 out of 5 stars Well Intentioned but Rife with the Modernist Heresy
The book is saturated with terrible theology and promotes what previous Pope's have dogmatically described as "education that is disgustingly called sexual." The image of God is not a sexual description, but the spiritual immaterial nature of Adam and Eve that reflects God and is thus His image. God is incorporeal.

The book is an expression of the Modernist...

5.0 out of 5 stars Sex is not just good..., October 6, 2009

This review is from: Theology of His Body / Theology of Her Body (Paperback)
Sex is not just good; sex is not even great; sex is holy. That is the conclusion of theologians concerning Pope John Paul II's "Theology of the Body." Far from the prudish prohibitions that ignore the reality of hormones, this is a proper understanding of what sex was meant to be and how that understanding is an icon of God. It is no wonder one JPII biographers has compared the theology of the body with a cultural time bomb set to explode sometime in the 21st century.

These are the keys to a new sexual revolution to fulfill what the mid-20th century sexual revolution promised but has failed to deliver. The theology of the body is a demonstration of the longing of the human heart that nothing will satisfy. It is a reaffirmation of Augustine's assertion that "our hearts are restless until they rest in [God]."

If you are familiar with the writings of JPII, you know his style can be difficult to grasp quickly. Jason Evert has given a wonderful simplification of JPII's thought suitable for teens or as a primer to this time bomb. While being a simplification, Mr. Evert avoids the danger of simplistic moralizing that misses the point of JPII's theology. In so doing, Mr. Evert strengthens the ties of this theology to the dignity of the human person.

Mr. Evert divides the material into two sections - one particularly suited for men and one for women. Each section is less than 50 pages making the entire book a quick read. Most teens (or adults) can read the entire work in a single day - which lends it well to sharing. It would be an ideal tool for homeschool or youth group discussions.

Set the time bomb in others. Ideas have consequences and this idea could very well have the power to change our culture for the better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truth and Beauty!, March 8, 2009

I'm back to purchase more of these books. This is a book that my husband and I wish to hand every young gentleman and have them read before they are allowed to date our daughters! And, this is an important read for every young lady too! It helps to erase the false ideas of our secular culture and replace them with the beauty and truth of God and what He has intended for the relationships of men and women.

All and all, this should be read by everyone (not just teens!). Yes, it's that important of a book! It gives the truth in how we should treat each other in God's great design.

PARENTS! PARENTS! PARENTS! Have the "talk" with your kids and their future spouse will thank you for it. This book is perfect for pre-teens through college bound adults. Quick read and good intro into TotB.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book, May 8, 2009

This review is from: Theology of His Body / Theology of Her Body (Paperback)
I am looking for a book to use in a 6 week sexuality component for our 8th grade faith formation class. I was desperately hoping that this book would be it, but it's not. Jason Evert does a wonderful job of touching on all the topics that we want to cover...modesty, chastity, sexuality, image of God, etc. The book is also short which wouldn't make it appear intimidating to kids who are being introduced to Theology of the Body. The problems that I had with the book are:
1) The abundance of quotes became annoying. Many of these quotes were by people the kids won't know and after reading them the kids' response would be "what does that mean"? I would have rather just seen a simple explanation of the point that was being made without the quote.
2) the vocabulary and imagery in Theology of the Body is hard for adults to grasp let alone 8th graders. While this book is much easier to understand than JPII's writing, it still is a bit much for young teens who are experiencing these "radical" ideas for the first time.

This would be a great book for a high school introduction to TOB (which may be who Jason Evert was intending it for), but, sadly, many middle school kids are following our culture's lead in thinking sex=love and need to hear this message NOW! I hope someone will write a TOB book geared toward young teens soon.

I started with the first chapter sample because I wasn't sure if this was the book for me but before I even finished the sample chapter I knew I would be buying this book.
This book spoke to me in a language that was neither too simplified or too "theology professor"-ish. It made me look at myself as a woman in proper perspective removing the glow of secular ideals.

As a Middle School Faith Formation coordinator, I will be implementing the Theology of the Body program into our curriculum. I wanted to read more about Theology of the Body, so I got this book and Theology of the Body for Beginners by Christopher West. I was happy to see how appropriate the material is not only for middle schoolers but myself as well!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wish this book was around when we we teens..., June 27, 2011
This review is from: Theology of His Body / Theology of Her Body (Paperback)
...just as I wish "if you really loved me," "God's plan for you," "Theology of the Body for teens," "theology of the body for beginners" and "Thrill of the Chaste" were around then....would have saved MILLIONS of people a LOT of heartache. But it's here now, and so I cannot recommend strongly enough that parents AND teens read this book and discuss it, meditate over it, take its message to heart. Young people need to hear the message of how precious they are in God's eyes so they do not cast their pearls before swine or hurt themselves and others. Especially since we live in a culture that tells everyone they are worthless unless they are thin enough, smart enough, handsome enough, rich enough etc. according to the world's standards. - Mrs.JCB
