Editorial Reviews

Review

-- 2nd Edition review: "It offers a succinct approach to basic study of philosophy, concept and theory development as related to nursing. It then provides a range of theories from a variety of sciences. It provides a framework in which to view nursing theorists and theories and does a nice job of presenting key components of these theories in a standardized format." -- 2nd Edition review: "It is well organized and the topic areas are thorough. The authors clearly and succinctly present information relevant to the topics at hand. The use of subheadings was particularly helpful in guiding the flow of content. The tables provided were also very helpful in highlighting key concepts and in the provision of definitions. I thought the book provided extremely helpful resources after each chapter, such as internet site addresses directly relevant to the content discussed. Overall, every aspect of this book, content and format, was very good." -- 2nd Edition review "There's a good foundational discussion in Chap. 1. The discussion of philosophy--theory development--analysis is well developed. The inclusion of new contemporary theories..."

For my first theory course, we had handouts and another book. And our class was mostly lost. As a novice nursing student, theory can be really difficult and hard to grasp. For our second course we used this book, and finally it clicked. We also had 2 amazing professors, but this book explained theory and theory development really well for students who don't understand it well. If this isn't required for your class and only recommended - buy it (used of course) or rent it or find a copy from the library. This is a great resource for new nursing students struggling with theory.

It wasn't too boring, but was bland to read. I thought the authors were redundant and overly opinionated on certain topics. Its a "teaching" text, and the authors came across as providing their view rather than objective.

I wouldn't have bought this if I wasn't taking a class that required it but with that said, it is a well written book. Breaks down nursing theory in a easy understand format.

I already purchased and own a hard copy as I am taking this class currently. I was excited to find this title on kindle. I drive for long distances with the work i do and have been exploring ways i could listen while driving. Unfortunately this publisher has not made it available for text to speech. Does anyone have any ideas or know how to do this if I purchase an eBook or kindle? Though it is a good book for learning the interesting topic of nursing theory I am giving a low star hoping the publisher will view and take into account today's learning methods.

Required text for graduate class. I ended up going to the library and ANY other nursing theory book is better than this one. Tomey & Alligood published books on nursing theory are much easier to understand.

Normally I don't buy the current version of books for my nursing theory classes, or don't buy them at all and try to find the same information online. BUT this time I bought it, and have been so glad. I used it a decent amount for my first theory class, and now am using it for a class it wasn't even required for! It helps in writing papers that you do not need the original author of a theory for. The authors do a good job of summarizing nursing theories, even the boring and ones that seem silly to be real theories. One reviewer said they could have been more objective, and I agree. I would like to see more non-nursing theories and their application to nursing.

I do not like the index and the table of contents could be better. The TOC for the most part only names theories and subsets of theories, but not the theorists, and I tend to know the theorist. Not every theorist named in the book is listed in the index, so if you once read something somewhere deep inside it and only recall the theorist name it is a pain to find the same section/page again.

I am a family nurse practitioner student.

It's a textbook. Not a fantastic read I'd recommend to everyone, but it was exactly what I needed in great condition.
