Book Description

January 15, 1997 0397552599 978-0397552597 Third
This definitive text demonstrates the connection between theoretical nursing and nursing practice, and shows how research is related to both. From Nightingale to the present, the author traces the work of major theorists through a description and analysis of the theory along with a critique and test of the theory. Coverage also includes: the processes and strategies used to develop theory; the most accepted criteria used to analyze and critique theory; and discussion on the use of theory to enhance the nursing profession. Four new chapters provide students with the most current information on the development of concepts and theory and metatheory: A Nursing Perspective, Patterns of Knowing: The Syntax of the Discipline, Strategies for Concept Development, and On Practical Wisdom. Bibliographies and reference lists have been expanded to include writings through early 1996, and incorporate contemporary philosophical discussions and interpretive approaches to knowledge development.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on professional research in health care, May 30, 2000

This review is from: Theoretical Nursing: Development and Progress (Hardcover)
Theoretical Nursing is not only well written and researched - it's also very readable. Its significance goes well beyond epistemological issues related to nursing. The author does a great job of balancing breadth and depth of the very appropriately chosen topics. Concepts are readily applicable to other disciplines and leave enough room for critical evaluation. The bibliography is excellent.

Required for a theory class.

Written poorly.
So dense I spent hours reading it and didn't feel like I gained anything.
Ended up buying additional texts on the same material that were better written.

3.0 out of 5 stars It was required., October 11, 2011

I ordered this book because it was required for a class I was taking. The author is well known throughout the profession for her contributions, but I found the book difficult to understand and follow, especially with the reference for every other word in the sentence. The text for me, read more like an opinionated reference list. Good Luck!
