About the Author

Thomas L. Saaty is a Distinguished University Professor at the University of Pittsburgh, where he teaches at the Pitt Graduate School of Business. He is best-known as being the modern mathematician who figured out a way to measure intangibles, and is the inventor, architect, and primary theoretician of the Analytic Hierarchy Process, a decision-making framework used for large-scale, multiparty, multi-criteria decision analysis, and of the Analytic Network Process, its generalization to decisions with dependence and feedback. Saaty is a member of National Academy of Engineering (2005), and in 2008 he received the Impact Prize from the Operations Research Society INFORMS for how the AHP has revolutionized the way we resolve complex decision problems. The publication of his books on the Analytic Hierarchy Process and the release of PC-based software such as SuperDecisions and web-based collaborative software such as Decision Lens have led to widespread dissemination of the process. The AHP has been applied worldwide to help decision makers in every conceivable decision context across both the public and private sectors, with literally thousands of reported applications.

More About the Author

Thomas L. Saaty is the creator of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), a theory for how to establish measures for intangibles most often used in decision making. It has been generalized to the Analytic Network Process (ANP) for decision making with feedback and dependence in networks. The AHP/ANP is particularly useful in group decision making and for handling large-scale multi-criteria decision problems common in business, industry, and government. He holds the chair of Distinguished University Professor at the Pitt Graduate School of Business of the University of Pittsburgh.

In 2008 the Institute of Operations Research and Management Science (INFORMS)recognized him with its Impact Award: "The AHP has revolutionized how we resolve complex decision problems." In 2007 he was awarded the Akao Prize from the International Society of Quality Function Deployment. In 2005 he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering: "For the development and generalization of the analytic hierarchy process and the analytic network process in multicriteria decision-making." The International Society of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (ISAHP.org) was established in 1988 and meets every two years.

This book is a clear example of the importance of rethink the teory and practice of decision making at governmental and enterprise level. It explains in technical and practical form the underlying theory for the systemic analysis of tangible and intangible factors.
In spite of the mathematical rigor that the author unfolds, the form as it quantifies the important inherent tangible elements to the complex situations, the neural basis of judgment in the decision making process and even his bond with the physics, makes of this book a remarkable advance for the decision theory . The decision situations usually involve benefits, costs, opportunities and risks. The ANP is a form to correctly approximate the uncertainty in the decision making process.

I bought this book for a class, and it was a useful reference, but it was very dense and math-intensive. It may not be for everyone unless you have a strong math background.

For the price, this is a pretty descent pseudo textbook and reference guide for setting up an Analytical Hierarchy, especially in cases with more than just a few criteria or factors to be considered. I bought it for a project at work where I thought the Analytic Hierarchy Process was a potential research methodology I wanted to use. The book came in handy as a reference in helping me set up matrices for pair-wise comparisons and to check for consistency.

The techniques and views expressed in this text are limited in application particularly in the field of Academia. There is need for additional work on the concept. Many researchers prefer to apply AHP in problems related to decision analysis, as it is easy to understand and interpret despite criticisms from experts in the field.
