Editorial Reviews

Review

"The style of writing is extremely appropriate for my students. It is clear and pitched at the right level for undergraduates with no prior theory background. The presence of ear training and keyboard exercises is a major asset, impressing upon the student the importance of these aspects in the study of theory, and helping the instructor with ready made examples for sightsinging, rhythmic exercises, dictation, and keyboard exercises - which should be part of any beginning theory course."

"Texts for my theory class cost over $300 when students have to purchase books in fundamentals, theory text and workbook, sight singing, and ear training. Every fall my students, parents, and other faculty all complain loudly to me about this! The cost of ONE BOOK would be a relief! The music examples are WONDERFUL!"

"By combining harmony, ear training, and piano in one text, THEORY ESSENTIALS has not only helped to coordinate elements, but will save student a lot of money on textbooks. I like very much the writing style of the text. It flows well and my students will react very positively to it."

"The analysis examples are concise and to the point. . . . they allow the student to demonstrate the concept discussed in the chapter. This book is not only good for a theorist to use but it's excellent for the professor who is not a theorist by nature . . . It's a wonderful text!"

"I like the way this textbook integrates the study of theory with the attainment of aural and keyboard skills sequentially presented. These aspects establish a complete study in theory. By doing so, students can better relate theory to real music."

Although I have to say I have no prior theory knowledge or have used another theory book before, after having four semesters of theory with this book and VOl. II, I really like the book. I combined theory, ear training, and keyboard skills all in one which is nice for community colleges.

The book really helps you with progressions, and it has really helped me with my compositions. You can take a listen to my songs @ [..]

This book has got to be right down there with the worst of all the theory books I have ever read. Yet, It does have it's moments in explaining things that are useful. Then it also has its moments where you have to suffer through the excessive wording, and lack of wording. Also poor book construction. The binding always wants to come undone and just isn't worth the time of day. There are much better theory books out there than this one. This one is only good if you have a great professor teaching from and away from the book.

Many theory textbooks complicate part writing and analysis. I had the oppotunity to review and study this book as well as a commonly used theory textbook. This textbook is far superior to the others. I recommend it highly

I like the book and my daughter is satisfied with it. I only regret that my satisfaction with this one is overshadowed with the bad handling of the second book " the theory essentials workbook vol 1" by the same author. Since I paid for the 2 books at the same time and with the same transaction I should not have had that part of my transaction supposedly cancelled for being out of stock. That cancelled transaction stayed on my bank account as a pending transaction for nearly a week without giving me the opportunity to use that money to buy the workbook somewhere else which I had to do. That transaction disappeared from my Amazon account (not my bank account) so I was unable to leave a bad review for that seller. I am still very upset that I can not trust that if you take my money and close the deal you do not stand by your agreement. Receiving an e-mail from you saying that you would not charge me for that amount does not guaranty that my bank would not have declined any purchase made with that money and charge me a fee. I would not attempt to try it so paying for the workbook kind of twice at that time was a hassle. If you still have the capability to give me that seller's name , I still would like to send a negative review. Thanks.
