Review

The Theory and Function of Mangoes is an unusually generous and expansive book of poems. This is a world where "enough's, well, not really quite enough . . . " The poet George Kalamaras moves and dwells among many outer-named places (Toledo, Poona, Godaulia Crossing, Delhi, South Bend) in conjunction with an insistent journey among inner-named places ("singing cells," "the road of the lost galaxy'). There are tones of restlessness and impatience which belie the "overly intellectual" feel the poet admits to. Poetry for me is a very experiential affair. In considering this book of poems among many other fine collections, I kept asking myself, "Who is this person? Where is this person from?" I think now that George Kalamaras is a Wind of mirror for me or for any reader who feels any affinity with "the tentative certainty of being . . . "

The Theory and Function of Mangoes is an exciting and exotic book of poems. -- Michael Burkard

5.0 out of 5 stars A reading in Minneapolis, April 11, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Theory and Function of Mangoes (Paperback)
I have freshly returned from a reading by Kalamaras and his personality was large and fantastic. The poetry in this volume is from his experiences in India, and there is a helpful index in the back to guide the reader through meanings and allusions. The style is strong and admirable. The idea of writing poetry from an adventure or a journey appeals to me. He read with gusto and appreciation.

This review is from: The Theory and Function of Mangoes (Paperback)
Reading The Theory and Function of Mangoes is a wonderful experience for the senses. Kalamaras uses gorgeous surreal images that cause the reader to actually think s/he is in India. Close your eyes and you can smell the scents, feel the textures and see the sights in your mind's eye.
