Book Description

Develop your own counseling style using Corey's bestselling THEORY AND PRACTICE OF COUNSELING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY. You will see the major theories of counseling (psychoanalytic, Adlerian, existential, person-centered, Gestalt, reality, behavior, cognitive-behavior, family systems, feminist and, and postmodern approaches) as they are used in practice through a case study focused on one client, "Stan." The case of "Stan" appears in each chapter so you can see how the theory presented in that chapter informs therapeutic decision-making. "At a Glance" charts pinpoint the major differences between theories in areas such as multicultural focus, basic philosophies, and limitations.

About This Edition

From the Publisher

New Features

  • An online and DVD program, "Theory in Practice: Counseling Stan," shows how the author works with Stan from each of the theoretical approaches covered in the book.

  • There is a new section on evidence-based practice and the trend toward accountability in counseling practice. Both sides of the controversy surrounding evidence-based practice are highlighted.

  • New to the theory chapters in Part 2 is a section on the applications of the concepts and techniques of each model to the practice of group counseling.

  • Chapter 15 ("An Integrative Perspective") is extensively revised and offers:

    • New coverage on the movement toward psychotherapy integration

    • Expanded coverage of the various routes to integration

    • New material on research demonstrating the importance of the therapeutic relationship

    • More discussion on the central role of the client in determining therapy outcomes

    • The case for practice-based evidence rather than evidence-based practice

    • Expanded and updated coverage of the conclusions from the research literature on the effectiveness of therapy.
  • Chapter objectives covering key concepts, the therapeutic process, and applications of techniques and procedures are now included.

Additional Features

  • The book covers contemporary theories of counseling, including psychoanalytic, Adlerian, existential, person-centered, Gestalt, reality therapy, behavior therapy, cognitive-behavior therapy, feminist therapy, family systems therapy, and post-modern approaches.

  • At-a-glance charts pinpoint the major differences between theories in areas such as multicultural focus, basic philosophies, and limitations. The charts also help users identify key differences between the approaches.

  • An accompanying User Manual helps readers apply theory to practice through summary charts, open-ended questions and cases, structured exercises, self-inventories, chapter quizzes, and a variety of activities.

  • A case study focusing on one client, "Stan," appears in each chapter, to demonstrate the application of all presented theories and make it easy for users to compare and contrast approaches. Now there is a new online and DVD program (Theory in Practice: Counseling Stan) that complements the "Stan" case study. The DVD shows how Jerry Corey works with Stan from each of the theoretical approaches covered in the book.

  • Online technology supplements for both the instructor and users include a downloadable Microsoft PowerPoint® presentation for instructors. Users have access to "Theory in Practice: The Case of Stan" DVD, online quizzing, and links to reliable, appropriate websites.

  • The book's flexible organization allows instructors to cover topics in any order they choose to best meet particular user or course design needs.

  • Corey's discussion of current ethical and professional issues facing counseling and human service professionals prepares users for the realities of practice.

  • A framework for creatively synthesizing the therapeutic models, along with step-by-step guidelines, enhance the book's focus on helping users draw from the various theoretical models to develop a personalized counseling style.

  • Two unique concluding chapters show users how to integrate the various theories when working with a client.

  • Sections on implications for multicultural practice have been revised in each theory chapter, exploring the question, "What would this theory be like if culture were to be made central to the theory?"

Review

"The section I think is most important is the "Therapeutic Process," as it really demonstrates the process from the perspective of both the client and the therapist. Additionally, this aspect is unique to this text. And these sections answer students' questions about how this approach really looks and feels in the therapy room. The multicultural perspective is particularly relevant for the diverse population that Florida International University trains, as diversity issues will surely arise for future counselors working with populations we have in our area."

"…responsibly integrates theory with a myriad of counseling skills, giving students better insight into what it means to be a counselor. The manuscript has nicely incorporated discussion points and possible techniques that can be adopted into various training models ensuring that counselors-in-training are becoming multiculturally competent. It has also provided students and faculty with a truer understanding of these issues as they relate to social justice."

"The biographical information that Dr. Corey provides for each theorist helps me, as a student, glean information about the character of the person writing the theory, and why certain aspects of a theory are important. In many of the chapters, the application of the theory in the case of Stan allows the student to get an idea of how the abstract parts of the theory can be played out in a real-life scenario. I also really like the multicultural perspective as it gives so much insight on how the theory will and will not work with clients that hold different cultural views than I do."

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource - but not on Kindle October 7, 2010
By Susy C
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I found this to be an excellent resource of information, particularly the various therapeutic approaches. However, I was extremely disappointed that I had ordered via my Kindle rather than hard copy. The charts provided in the book are not legible in the Kindle edition and for $80+, I felt cheated from crucial study material contained in the compact format of the various charts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Corey's Theory & Practice of Counseling & Psychotherapy October 22, 2008
Format:Hardcover
This is an excellent book, and probably the best of its kind. It guides you through the various approaches to psychotherapy, giving you all the details necessary for you to comprehend each method fully as well as to compare the methods with one another. The comparison becomes even easier as Corey presents the case of "Stan" at the end of each chapter and demonstrates how each approach would deal with his dilemma. I think this book is interesting for anyone who likes psychology and psychotherapy, but is a must for people looking to go into the profession of psychotherapy in order to attain a broad perspective about techniques and approaches that may be employed according to one's personality and style, as well as each unique client's needs..

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Text for Counseling Students December 19, 2008
By B. Pitt
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was assigned this text for my Theories of Counseling class my first semester in graduate school. Corey does a great job of breaking down 14 different therapeutic theories into their most basic principles. This is a great book for anyone interested in learning about becoming a therapist or for that journeyman therapist who needs a quick refresher.
