Product Description

Thera-Band Hand Exercisers are specially formulated polymer-based* exercisers available in progressive levels of resistance in five translucent colors. Two sizes (standard and extra large) accommodate most hand sizes. They're used for hand, finger and forearm strengthening, as well as hot and cold therapy. Progressive resistance in different levels of compression allow each exercise to be geared to the patient. Use the standard size hand exerciser for smaller hands. The Extra Large size was designed for arthritis victims and people with larger hands who are undergiong physical therapy or strength training. An elongated ball, it is one-third larger than the oringinal hand exerciser. Heat in a microwave for 5 second increments and test to find the ideal time for each microwave unit (all microwaves are different), usually no more than 15 seconds maximum. Cool the Hand Exerciser in a refrigerator for 1.5 to 2 hours. The softer yellow and red models fill the gap between putty and spring devices and they're not as messy as putty. *The Hand Exerciser is made of a patented non-latex polymer developed specifically to allow full range of motion of the hand and fingers with a consistent resistance throughout the exercise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product!, September 1, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Thera-Band Hand Exerciser - Available in Two Sizes - Single Packs (Misc.)
I initially ordered a different set of hand exercise balls here on Amazon. I only used them briefly as I suspect they may be made with toxic materials (they have a very strong petrochemical smell and that odor lingers on your hands and fingers after use). So I decided to give the Thera-Band hand exerciser a try. I ordered the medium one (green) in XL and I really like it. It feels great in my hands and it looks and feels like it will last for a long time. The added benefit is that you can heat or cool the ball before using it. As another reviewer wrote, get the XL size rather than the regular size. After trying the green ball, I ordered the extra firm ball (black). So I warm up with the green, and switch to the black after I've loosened up a bit. Very nice product. If you have reasonably strong hand strength, I would minimally start with the green. I will probably order the blue to complete the set of what I would need.

3.0 out of 5 stars Inconsistent, August 8, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I ordered the Extra Large Black Hand Exerciser, but initially received the regular size black one instead. The vendor (Medical Department Stores) immediately apologized, sent me the correct item, and even threw in a discout code for my next purchase. Excellent customer service!!!

The product itself, however, is very inconsistent. The regular size ball is very firm, and is consistent throughout; but the Extra Large version is not. There is a seam from the mold it was made in. From the seam to one end of the Extra Large looks and feels just like either half of the regular size ball. The longer end of the Extra large is MUCH softer and stickier. I asked the manufacturer if it was supposed to be like this; and they told me that this is a defect -- but the replacement they sent me is exactly the same. Great Customer Service -- Terrible Quality Control.

All of them are useable -- just not quite what I was expecting, and not as useful as they would be if manufactured properly.

The only other issue I have with them is that they are always either sticky or dirty (or both). I wash them in the sink with mild hand soap (which makes them extremely sticky), and then roll them in corn starch baby powder. I keep them on plastic trays, to keep them from sticking to the table; but using them wears off the powder and makes them stick to my hands again within a day or two.

The oblong shape of the Extra Large makes it much more versitle than the regular. It can be squeezed from end to end, making it larger and providing a greater range of motion; or it can be squeezed from side to side, giving a better tight grip exercise, with more surface area available than the regular ball.

They work fairly well if you have the patience to maintain them; but would be much better if there were better quality control in the manufacturing process, and perhaps a cloth cover, or some other type of "skin", to keep them from sticking to everything.

4.0 out of 5 stars User friendly hand exerciser, May 29, 2010
This review is from: Thera-Band Hand Exerciser - Available in Two Sizes - Single Packs (Misc.)
This is the most user friendly, helpful hand exerciser I have ever tried. I am 77 yrs old with arthritis and I keep one by my bed, and one by the TV. Easy to pick up and play with and it's not a big deal. I recommend the XL even if you have small hands. It isn't much larger than the small one but the shape is easier to use. I have the red and the green ones. They are the least resistance but for my hands they work perfectly. If you have any stiffness in your hands and/or fingers, these really feel good and keep your hands more flexible.
