5.0 out of 5 stars A cornucopia of exercises., January 16, 2008
This review is from: Therapeutic Exercise: Foundations and Techniques (Therapeutic Exercise: Foundations & Techniques) (5th edition) (Hardcover)
I like two things about this book. The first is that it is very thorough and complete. Exercises, both stretching and strengthening, are included for basically every major muscle group or extremity motion. Furthermore, the book is divided up well enough that you can find what you're looking for fast.

Secondly, I like the fact that this book is evidence-based, meaning that it backs up what it suggests with references from the scientific literature. In fact, it's so good that it can be a great place to start a literature search from.

Know too that this book is mainly written for people who have some medical background of sorts, so if you're just an average reader looking for some workout exercises, this probably isn't your book. Rather, I feel like the book is better suited for athletic trainers, personal trainiers, occupational therapists, chiropractors, physical therapists, exercise physiologists, massage therapists, and so on. Practitioners looking for more info on the shoulder might also want to check out Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff -for more detailed ex's on rotator cuff tear prevention and rehabilitation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for injury self-management, May 27, 2009
By
AJ (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Therapeutic Exercise: Foundations and Techniques (Therapeutic Exercise: Foundations & Techniques) (5th edition) (Hardcover)
Had broken arm (sports injury). I felt that my Kaiser medical professionals' explanations of injury, treatment and rehabilitation were not informative enough. Got this book and was very happy because it explains things THOROUGHLY! Am making good rehab progress because I'm doing exercises that the book shows and explains (exercises that my Physical Therapist hadn't shown or given to me).

The book is intended for professional Physical Therapists, but it is excellent for physically-active lay people who are willing to take some time and effort to learn about human physiology and some technical/medical terminology.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

I also bought Trail Guide to the Body: How to Locate Muscles, Bones, and More (3rd Edition)--another good reference book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect, August 23, 2008

This review is from: Therapeutic Exercise: Foundations and Techniques (Therapeutic Exercise: Foundations & Techniques) (5th edition) (Hardcover)
I am quite athletic and injured some muscles/tendons. I was in physical therapy and wanted to know more about why specific exercises were helping more than I had expected. This is a perfect book for the aging athlete who will start getting more and more minor problems from wear and tear, that seem to take longer and longer to heal. This book describes quite clearly and completely activies that help both in prevention and recovery. The knowledge it contains will help anyone heal as quickly as possible and avoid reinjury.
