Book Description

March 11, 1999
Renowned for her contributions as a psychoanalytic theorist, Karen Homey was also a gifted clinician and teacher of analysts. She included chapters on therapy in several of her books, wrote essays on clinical issues throughout her career, and was preparing to write a book on analytic technique at the time of her death. The lectures collected here constitute a version of that book. This volume provides the most complete record to date of Karen Horney's ideas about the therapeutic process. It offers valuable insight into a little-known aspect of her work and fresh understanding of issues that continue to be of concern to clinicians.

Well ahead of her time, Karen Homey viewed therapy as a collaborative enterprise in which the open, frank, and supportive therapist grows along with the patient. She discusses countertransference phenomena and the ways in which a therapists personality can influence the healing process. She offers much wisdom and practical advice based on her own rich experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quintessential Lectures on Psychoanalytical Technique, May 18, 2001

This review is from: The Therapeutic Process: Essays and Lectures (Hardcover)
Grounded in her theoretical framework of the human need to create a 'glorified self' to rise above one's basic anxiety, these eleven posthumously published lectures by Karen Horney are penetratingly powerful and incisive. As with many of Horney's writings, the reader will find himself (or herself), both as therapist and patient, resonating deeply with Horney's diverse descriptions of the patient-psychotherapist relationship. Without using the classical jargon of psychoanalysis, Horney remains consistent and true to her grasp of the life and death battle between neurosis and healthy growth. Bernard Paris does his usual excellent job of chronicling the various essays and lectures, as well as organizing Horney's own theoretical development; but it is Horney's writings, themselves, that ring clear - it's not easy to learn the truth about oneself; it is a lifelong process that requires great tenacity, endless self-searching, and ruthless honesty - and no one can do it but the patient herself.
