Book Description

A Therapist's Guide to EMDR reviews the theoretical basis for EMDR and presents new information on the neurobiology of trauma. It provides a detailed explanation of the procedural steps along with helpful suggestions and modifications.

Areas essential to successful utilization of EMDR are emphasized. These include: case conceptualization; preparation for EMDR trauma processing, including resource development and installation; target development; methods for unblocking blocked processing, including the creative use of interweaves; and session closure. Case examples are used throughout to illustrate concepts. The emphasis in this book is on clinical usefulness, not research. This book goes into the therapy room with clinicians who actually use EMDR, and shows readers how to do it in practice, not just in theory. In short, this is the new, practical book on EMDR.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best practical handbook on EMDR!!, May 23, 2008
This review is from: A Therapist's Guide to EMDR: Tools and Techniques for Successful Treatment (Hardcover)
I found Parnell's A Therapist Guide to EMDR so accessible and comprehensive, it was a pleasure to read. It is a great review for anyone who has just taken the courses or who wants to review and update their skills in EMDR. I loved the way she presented a technique and then often followed it up with very specific how-to case examples. I could clearly see Parnell's exceptional skillfulness and respectful caring for each of her clients' processes.
I also just find it helpful as a practical resource handbook to check up on a particular technique and read about the different aspects of it. Its a must have for EMDR therapists!

This review is from: A Therapist's Guide to EMDR: Tools and Techniques for Successful Treatment (Hardcover)
This is a clear and very readable text. While basic in some ways, it is a solid, helpful, elucidating guidebook, even for more advanced practitioners. Thank you once again, Laurel. I will continue to use it as a reference in my EMDR work, most happily, and will recommend it to my colleagues.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Therapist's Guide to EMDR: Tools and Techniques for Successful Treatment, July 11, 2010

This review is from: A Therapist's Guide to EMDR: Tools and Techniques for Successful Treatment (Hardcover)
Laurel Parnell states, "This book is for EMDR trained therapists who want to know more about how to integrate EMDR into their psychotherapy practices," and that is exactly what it does! It is a practical book that gives a great deal of useful information on the implementation of EMDR with clients. As a therapist trained in EMDR, this book has been a wonderful bridge between the training I recieved and the actual use of EMDR in my psychotherapy practice. I have used this book as both a refresher course and as a guide to answer questions that come up as I work with clients. I highly recommend this book to all EMDR trained therapists as a resource and adjunct to their library.
