I found Parnell's A Therapist Guide to EMDR so accessible and comprehensive, it was a pleasure to read. It is a great review for anyone who has just taken the courses or who wants to review and update their skills in EMDR. I loved the way she presented a technique and then often followed it up with very specific how-to case examples. I could clearly see Parnell's exceptional skillfulness and respectful caring for each of her clients' processes.
I also just find it helpful as a practical resource handbook to check up on a particular technique and read about the different aspects of it. Its a must have for EMDR therapists!

Laurel Parnell states, "This book is for EMDR trained therapists who want to know more about how to integrate EMDR into their psychotherapy practices," and that is exactly what it does! It is a practical book that gives a great deal of useful information on the implementation of EMDR with clients. As a therapist trained in EMDR, this book has been a wonderful bridge between the training I recieved and the actual use of EMDR in my psychotherapy practice. I have used this book as both a refresher course and as a guide to answer questions that come up as I work with clients. I highly recommend this book to all EMDR trained therapists as a resource and adjunct to their library.

I've been doing EMDR for several years, with great success for my clients. I'd made a few changes to the protocol when it seemed appropriate, but felt a bit of apprehension about not strictly following "the rules." Parnell's book was like a breath of fresh air that has invigorated my EMDR practice. She is not afraid to break with protocol when it's in the client's best interest to do so. For example, there are several situations in which she doesn't take the VOC, feeling that it interrupts the process that has begun by asking the client to bring up the trauma memory.
Other gems include installing resources in addition to the safe place. These can be guides, protectors, and/or the client's adult self when working on childhood trauma. She gives a method for the therapist to clear out any vicarious traumatization at the end of each day...there wasn't a single chapter that didn't provide a new technique or approach.
Reading this book is like having a down-to-earth, very wise mentor giving you the benefit of her experience.
Well-written, with many case studies to bring the material to life.
I first found this book in a library, and by the time I'd read the second chapter, knew I had to own it, and bought the Kindle edition, so I could highlight to my heart's content.
This one is a keeper!

Laurel Parnell writes the most clear, insightful and comprehensive books on EMDR. Although she is not the founder, she has taken EMDR in directions that are not only veery useful, she also has added more of the "heart and soul" to the technique. I highly recommend this and other books that she has written on the topic.

This is a clear and very readable text. While basic in some ways, it is a solid, helpful, elucidating guidebook, even for more advanced practitioners. Thank you once again, Laurel. I will continue to use it as a reference in my EMDR work, most happily, and will recommend it to my colleagues.

I love this book and reference it often. It is easy to read, but very helpful in understanding EMDR at a deeper level and how/when to use it and prepare clients. I would highly recommend this to any EMDR therapist, especially those working with highly traumatized clients.

I am a therapist and I think this book is very useful . I had my EMDR training several years ago. This wonderul book fills in alot of gaps in getting people ready to do deep trauma work and good tips on choice points for processing emotional pain ie trauma. I liked the chapters on how to feel more centered and connected to one's self using EMDR. It helps with my EFT work as well. Ms Parnell is a skilled clinician and her book is one of my favorite resources. Readable, practical. I felt more confident as a therapist after reading it .
