Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 3–Tiny, Moonpie, and André are back in this follow-up to There Are Cats in This Book (Candlewick, 2008). No longer content to stay within the confines of their book, the three felines conspire to escape the pages and see the world. They eventually succeed, with readers' help, and return with a pleasant surprise (for cat lovers, at least). Schwarz incorporates many of the same elements that made the first book so much fun: page manipulation, bold colors, and the ongoing dialogue between the cats and readers. This book teaches children about the connection that develops when a story is completely engaging. They are afforded every opportunity to respond and take an active part in the cats' adventure. The brush and ink cartoons are a hoot, and the dialogue balloons are easy to read. Metafiction has never been more cuddly or as much fun.Kara Schaff Dean, Walpole Public Library, MA

Our favorite cats that we met in There Are Cats in This Book are back! This book had me hooked from the very beginning with the word balloon on the end paper that said "Did you pack the can opener?" As before, there are lots of opportunities for interaction. Much like Mo Willem's book, this one is just crying out to be performed, not just read aloud. Read it with a group and see how many young kids you can get jumping and pushing along with these cats in their efforts to see the world. What a magical moment when they manage to wish themselves out, leaving nothing behind but a postcard. When they return to the book with all their new found friends, things end on the perfect note... a note saying there isn't enough milk!

This is a great book for story time when you need a short little interactive tale. The cats are simply drawn, but are so expressive and charming that they will engage every little reader. This author strikes just the perfect tone that is sure to spark more than a few imaginations as they start to wonder about the nature of book characters and their relationship to readers. A solid choice, but please note that there is a pop out fold and a fold out flap "postcard" that make this a chancy proposition for rowdier readers. Recommended.

A thoroughly delightful book to share one-on-one. I gave this and its companion, There Are Cats in This Book, to my 4 year old granddaughter. Based on reviews, I had considered buying them for my K-4 school library but because of the movable parts, I decided not to, and that was a good decision. The Mo Willems-type humor makes it a real crowd pleaser, but the book would not stand up to the heavy use a popular picture book gets in a school library.

We had borrowed another book by Viviane Schwarz from our local library, 'There Are Cats in this Book', and my son loved it! So we got him this one for Christmas.
The book is very cute, and I love the way the cats interact with the reader, asking them to do things like turn a page, or help wish them out of the book!

This is a delightful book! Charming artwork and witty engaging writing.

I bought this and "There are No Cats in this Book" for my great niece and nephew and I know they will love them and their parents will probably read them again after the kids are asleep!

My children are 5 and 2 and both of them think this book is wonderful. They love to "wish" the cats out of the book. It is one of those kids stories that gets the kids involved with pop-ups, pull-outs, and general fun for all.

a wonderful and funny book with delightful illustrations. It's a gift for a particularly dog-centric household and I'm sure it will succeed in making clear that cats are fun, too!
