Book Description

March 1, 2007
Legend claims this antique Irish wedding veil can grant your heart's deepest desire. But be careful what you wish for...
The moment Texas socialite Delaney Cartwright touches the veil, she knows she can't go through with her wedding. And it's not just because she envisions a stranger's dark eyes and irresistible lips the second her fingers hit lace. But she can't simply call the whole thing off. The nuptials to her nice, predictable childhood friend are the social event of the season (not to mention that her mother would freak). To fan the flames of this dying ember, Delaney abducts her fiance for a night of passion...and grabs the wrong guy! It isn't her fault that Detective Nick Vinetti of the oddly familiar eyes and lips has crossed her path--and looks game for all kinds of sexy fun.
Now Delaney hatches an outrageous plan to get out of marrying: she'll hire her own kidnapper. With an altar to avoid and a cop to dream of, this runaway bride is hoping a little Irish magic will unveil the true destiny of her heart.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Seasoned romance writer Wilde offers her take on the runaway-bride tale. Texas oil heiress and interior designer Delaney Cartwright has always followed her mother's wishes, but now she is weeks away from her extravagant wedding to Dr. Evan Van Zandt and plotting her own kidnapping. Her fiance may be her perfect society match, but it is police detective Nick Vinetti, the grandson of a client, with whom Delaney pictures herself walking down the aisle. When she finds a beautiful veil in a consignment shop, the owner warns her it will deliver her one true wish--even if she won't admit what that is. This is the first in a planned series about the enchanted veil working its magic on a circle of friends, and Wilde definitely leaves readers anticipating the next installment. The opening tale is predictable but satisfying: although Delaney ends up with the man she truly loves, it takes a wild ride to get there. Aleksandra Kostovski

3.0 out of 5 stars There Goes the Bride, September 2, 2007
This review is from: There Goes the Bride (Mass Market Paperback)
Delaney Cartwright's wedding to Dr. Evan Van Zandt will be the social event of the year, if Delaney actually goes through with it. Delaney is having second thoughts because there is no passion in their relationship.

Nick Vinetti is an undercover cop on medical leave after getting hurt on the job. Since his wife left him, Nick has lost his belief in romance and love. Meeting Delany changes his views, but she's engaged and therefore off limits.

Delaney's mother cares more about her social standing than her daughter's feelings, which she proves with the deep, dark secret she is hiding, and her father has buried his feelings for so long he doesn't know how to dig himself out.

Can a "magic" veil or talks with her sister in her dreams help Delaney decide what to do?

I have mixed feelings about There Goes The Bride. On one hand Delaney finds her soul mate and it's romantic and touching, but on the other, she is engaged and her actions are not very affable. I really like Nick and I wanted him and Delaney to be together, bit I felt bad for Evan. There Goes The Bride is a good story and Delany's mother's predicament adds suspense, but I think it romanticizes unfaithfulness.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wilde madcap contemporary romance, March 11, 2007
This review is from: There Goes the Bride (Mass Market Paperback)
In Houston the upcoming marriage between Delaney Cartwright and her fiancé orthopedic surgeon Dr. Evan van Zandt makes all of the societal pages of newspapers and magazines. However, the bride has doubts although she admits her fiancé is a nice likable person; she wants sparks and there are none. She even agreed to his suggestion no sex until they marry because she does not expect to miss it at least with Evan.

Delaney stops at a consignment shop that sells wedding attire; there she buys a veil that seems to be calling to her and makes a wish to get out of her nuptials. Her friends persuade her to abduct Evan and have her way with him. Instead she almost kidnaps Evan's patient, undercover Detective Dominic Vanetti, whom she has seen in a vision when she first touched the veil. Still her plan now is to hire someone to abduct her so she does not have to say I do, but someone else has the same agenda with a different outcome.

THERE GOES THE BRIDE is a Wilde madcap contemporary romance with paranormal elements. Delaney is a nice person that readers will not initially respect because of her fear of behaving wrongly in the eyes of her societal mother. That includes avoiding telling her she does not want to wed Evan; this leads to her concocting this maniacal scheme even as she knows her fiancé is a kind person deserving better treatment from her.. Ironically her plot becomes real with the cause inadvertently being the prime reason her mother demanded proper behavior from her, her late older sister and her father.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enchanting . . ., June 4, 2007
By
This review is from: There Goes the Bride (Mass Market Paperback)
. . . from the very first page! Quite a departure for Lori Wilde, as this book is not an adventure-romance like her most previous novels (though she can't quite help herself and includes a slam-bang car chase towards the end). This is a straight-on romance, with delicious sexual tension vibrating through the entire story between lovely, sheltered bride-to-be Delaney and the down to earth cop Nick from the large Italian family. There's a great cast of supporting players, with seniors Trudie and Lucia the laugh-out-loud best of the rest.

Excellent writing with a little bit of magic, a lot of humor, all adding up to a true winner. Wilde proves herself one of the sharpest romance writers of recent years and is getting better with each book. You'll fall in love with this one!
