4.0 out of 5 stars Good Beginning Spaceship Information
I own several "There Goes a..." videos for my 4 and 2 year old grandsons and borrow many of the others in this series from the library. My grandsons love all of them. I am not a big Dave & Becky fan, but I thought they were much more tolerable (not so goofy acting) in this one--perhaps because space travel is considered more serious than maybe, monster truck driving? 3.0 out of 5 stars There Goes a Faux Spaceship....
might have been a better title. We have 2 others in this series, Fire Truck and Bulldozer, and they are worn thin from my kids' constant watching of them. This one is different, though-- it is mostly about Dave and Becky goofily doing astronaut training stuff, and then dreaming that they are lost on a faraway planet (that looks an awful lot like the California desert)...

might have been a better title. We have 2 others in this series, Fire Truck and Bulldozer, and they are worn thin from my kids' constant watching of them. This one is different, though-- it is mostly about Dave and Becky goofily doing astronaut training stuff, and then dreaming that they are lost on a faraway planet (that looks an awful lot like the California desert) with no way home. This is interesting to a point, but it's not the same sort of truck-o-licious excitement that makes your toddler jump up and down and scream "TUCK!!! TUCK!!!" like they will for the others in this series. And I could have definitely done without the discussion of how astronauts go to the bathroom in their space suits-- as if little boys need any encouragement to go on a potty talk binge. I think this video provides an interesting look into how astronauts train, and some info about what it's like to ride in a space shuttle, but there's nothing learned about space itself (which my kids and I were hoping for) and it's not the same sort of gee-whiz experience as the other, more vehicle-filled titles in the series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but not Earth-shattering, September 24, 1999
By A Customer
So far, all of the "There Goes a..." series that I've seen have been wonderful videos. They entertain as well as educate and, of course, they're all about big, noisy, powerful vehicles containing footage that grabs you attention. Although this video does have some shots of the space shuttle, it doesn't seem to be as impressive as the other Fire Truck, Train or Garbage Truck videos that I've seen. And the mini-"Planet Of the Apes" at the end really does nothing for the video... It's interesting, but not as captivating as the more "down to Earth" videos.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the best of this usually great series, August 1, 1999

As a big fan on the "There Goes A ..." series, I was disappointed with this one. The first 20 minutes are great, but the final "dream" sequence at the end is a boring waste of film and drags on forever. My 2 year-old son, however, loves it. He looks puzzled during the aforementioned dream sequence, but he loves Dave and Becky and hangs in there anyway. Too bad they didn't find a better use of the "dream" time! Perhaps too much of the NASA footage is copyrighted?

1.0 out of 5 stars Just Awful, July 16, 2002
This review is from: There Goes a Spaceship [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Grandma gave us this video and my sons just hated it. There is no coherent organization at all to the footage - the narrators just race frantically around a space museum from a space simulator to a saturn 5 rocket to whatever else is nearby. The museum exibits offer no action of their own, so the narrators had to contrive some. And as for the narrators Dave and Becky... they seem to be in competition as to who can ham it up more on camera, which was enough to drive every adult out of the room. Not educational, not entertaining, but plenty annoying. Save your money.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too much talk and not enough action, March 31, 1999
By A Customer

I bought this video hoping that it would be similar to Stage Fright Production's videos, e.g., Choo Choo Trains Up Close and Very Personal. My children love that video. Unfortunately, There Goes A Spaceship lacks everything that makes the Choo Choo train video successful. In Spaceship, the NASA footage was excellent. There was simply too little of it. The hosts of Spaceship spend too much time in front of the camera. I doubt anybody, at any age, would find their skits or jokes funny or interesting. Every time one of them came on, my son turned to me and said "See rocket? See shuttle?" Don't waste your money on this one.

2.0 out of 5 stars Little Mammoth is better, November 18, 2003

I bought this video for my son because I was looking for a child-level introduction to the some of the things I find interesting. My son does enjoy this video but I feel that he doesn't need to be exposed to the pointless, foolish humor used throughout. There are some good scenes in this video. One of Dave running alongside a Saturn 5 rocket really gives a sense of the scale, but why give a visual explanation of how an astronaut uses a toilet? If you're looking for a good video for kids that introduces them to the space shuttle and rockets I would recommend The Big Space Shuttle by Little Mammoth Media.

I am not a big Dave & Becky fan, but I thought they were much more tolerable (not so goofy acting) in this one--perhaps because space travel is considered more serious than maybe, monster truck driving? I (and my grandsons) were impressed by the amount of very interesting information on traveling in space in this video. For example, I had no idea that the space shuttles were so enormous, how exactly they take off, etc. We all learned so much from this video. I agree with other reviewers that the dream sequence seemed confusing to small children and "out of place". My grandsons and I thought it was pretty interesting on how astronauts go potty (gave us all a chuckle), eat M & M's, sleep, etc. in space. Overall, I was impressed with this video and can recommend buying it.

4.0 out of 5 stars another adventure for Dave and Becky, July 31, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: There Goes a Spaceship [VHS] (VHS Tape)
If you are familiar with the There Goes A .... video series, you'll know what to expect here. Dave and Becky visit rockets, try on space suits and generally bring a bit of the Stooges to NASA as they learn about rockets and astronauts. Not the best of there many adventures, but of interest to fans of the series or kids who want to know a bit about our space program.
