1.0 out of 5 stars Not one original idea or thought
All these glowing reviews aside, this is a pretty bad CD. After my first listen I thought it was pretty cool. Repeated listenings reveal an artist attempting to make an 'artistic statment' that falls short of anything memorable. 'Back In 1999' is the only keeper here. The less said about the 2 attempts at social commentary the better--'I Might Look White' is an...

4.0 out of 5 stars Where is Bob when ya need him??, August 15, 2000

I had heard "bisexual chick" on a promotional video before watching American Psycho this spring, and I really thought it was funny. So, upon returning home and getting my old job back at the record store, I picked up FROM THERE TO HERE. I was pleasantly suprised. My best friend and scanned through the tracks and loved track #2 (Where's Bob Dylan When You Need Him). He rushed out the next day and purchased it as well. A good sound investment for someone interested in entertaining creative music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Album!, May 5, 2000

My friends have been telling me about Oszajca for the last 8 months (since they saw him at Woodstock 99) so I just had to get the album...it was so much more than I expected! It's got some really fun "Beckish" type songs like "Where's Bob Dylan" and "Funny Shade", but my favorite is the ballad "Ain't So Bad" at the end of the record...it made me cry, and a song has not touched me like that ever.."you look in the mirror and you can't escape your face, but it's alright, baby it's alright" This album is a desert island pick!

This guy is real. Now married to lisa marrie presley. And he is still singing the same songs he sang in seattle in 93. He never sold out, he paid his dues, hes down rihgt authentic. John never even herd of beck, when he wrote most of his songs. Try it aint so bad. "It's a hit".

4.0 out of 5 stars Beck's Progeny, August 19, 2000

The children of Beck are coming! Here's the first of them. Be grateful he's a good one. John Oszajca's first CD, From There to Here, is eleven tracks of sharp commentary, mix and match pastiches not unlike Beck's Mellow Gold. To Oszajca's credit, he never sounds as if he's plagiarizing L.A.'s finest. This is in large part due to his narrative sensibilities (his lyrics all make sense), and also that his quavery tremolo harks back to Keith Carradine or other early 70's folkies. There's nothing cutting edge about these tunes - there's a whiff of retro about them (which is funny considering these cut-and-paste techniques have only recently come to the fore in pop music) - but solid songs are a comfort no matter the circumstances, and the highlights here are multiple. Try "Bisexual Chick" (you know you want to), "Valley of the Dolls", or the heavily nostalgic "Back in 1999".

4.0 out of 5 stars where did bob dylan go?, August 11, 2000

after listening to J.O.'s new cd, i must say that he has some good stuff in there. It's leaning between roots and alternative, not exactly sure on what side it weights more. The kine or on the line of Pete Droge and Ian Moore, which are pretty good, if not excellent musicians themselves. but hey where did bob dylan go?

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great New Artist, June 8, 2000

It's been awhile since I was waiting anxiously for a CD to come out. After a friend gave me a promo copy of the CD with "Back in 1999" and "Funny Shade of Blue", I knew I just had to have this album. And boy was I not disappointed. Nearly every song is a great one, and those that aren't are at least good. Oszajca sounds somewhat similar to Beck, but mostly has enough talent to distinguish himself. In fact, I could swear part of "Funny Shade of Blue" has the exact same rhythm as a Beck song, but I just can't match it. Still, Oszajca's originality shines through. "I Hate You (My Friend)" and "This is How She Goes" are fun and danceable, "Bisexual Chick" is a hilarious send-up of the relentlessly hip woman, and I could easily imagine the very accessible "Back in 1999" beating back the bubblegum tide on the radio waves. That would be nice. All in all, this CD is a must-have for its fun, originality, spunk, wit, charm, cool, danceability, and cleverness.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Love this CD, June 5, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: From There to Here (Audio CD)
I had the pleasure of seeing John play years ago in Seattle and thought to myself, this guy really has something. Then to my great pleasure, he is picked up, and puts out an awsome CD. It has a great array of songs that all define what I think John is about. His music and poetry are honest and deep. I agree with one of the other reviews, I think "This is how she goes" is maybe the best, however I love "Valley of the Dolls" and "Remember Me" a lot.

Do yourself a favor and get this one! You won't regret it.
