We love the Old Lady Books. Each book in the series follows a predictable pattern. If you have read one of the old lady books you know she will be eating odd things to spit out a surprise at the end. There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Books continues the pattern of eating and spitting out something related to the theme at the end. In this story she swallows some books, a pen, a pencil case, a ruler, folder, chalk, and a bag... Until she hops on the school bus, says a cheer, and out pops a ______ (O, I can't tell you, that would spoil the ending for you - GET THE BOOK). The illustrations are well done and the rhyming text is always a hit with grades Pre-K to first grade. It is a great read for back to school. Do a search on Google for There Was An Old Lady Printables and you will find many activities you can use at home or in the classroom with this book and many other Old Lady Books.

Cute idea, but the forced rhythm actually make this annoying to read aloud. "I don't know why she swallowed the books, but she didn't get any looks." My kids, 4 and 6, kept asking what that meant.

.... before I read this one. I was very disappointed with it. The author didn't try to follow the original rhythm of the poem and has added extra syllables rather than find different words to use. The pictures are the only saving grace. And who decorates their pencil case with chalk?! Buy a different book. ANY book!!

I have many in the series and most are great. This one does not have the flow that the others do. The rhymes are a bit off and it all seems too forced. Some of the phrasing does not make much sense.

There once was a publisher named Scholastic.
They published a book that they thought fantastic.
It made me sick.

There was no rhythm, nor reason to it.
The author just sent them a big pile of $(-)!+!!!,
and they published it.

Small wonder that kids out there can't seem to write.
Due to garbage like this that they read every night,
they aren't real bright.

Absolutely atrocious! My kid's school was pushing this through some Scholastic program. Luckily, we opted for renting it from our local library. I am so glad I didn't waste any money on this pile. Does anyone actually read books before they publish them, or before they try to sell this crap to our children? C'mon folks, it's like 30 sentences! Take a minute or two for some QA before allowing this kind of garbage to infest our schools and make our kids into idiots.

This book has poor, forced rhymes with a plopped on, did I miss a few pages, ending. Too hard to read because it is painful.

There was a librarian who read this book, she moaned and she groaned when she read this book, - what a drag.
