5.0 out of 5 stars My kids love this book
While this book does not say monsters are a figment of a child's imagination, it is a great kid's book. I have two boys and they both love it, despite one of them being frightened of virtually everything. Rather than telling kids monsters don't exist, which no monster-fearing kid will believe anyway, this book demonstrates how one boy found a way to overcome his fears and...

1.0 out of 5 stars WORST CHILDREN'S BOOK EVER -- BAD MESSAGES AND POOR WRITING!
Typically the children's books involving monsters have some amicable resolution where the monster is silly, or harmless, or misunderstood -- not this horrible tome. The messages it leaves with your child are 1) Monsters are everywhere, no matter what your parents say, and are out to get you; and 2) Violence, particularly a martial art in this case, is really the only way...

While this book does not say monsters are a figment of a child's imagination, it is a great kid's book. I have two boys and they both love it, despite one of them being frightened of virtually everything. Rather than telling kids monsters don't exist, which no monster-fearing kid will believe anyway, this book demonstrates how one boy found a way to overcome his fears and scare them off himself (he took karate lessons). Don't let the other reviewer scare you off...it's a good book that will not give a kid nightmares, even those who are fearful of monsters. It might however leave them begging for karate lessons.

5.0 out of 5 stars A GREAT BOOK, August 16, 2007
This review is from: There Are Monsters Everywhere (Hardcover)
I just have to say that it is important that you do not consider the foolish review prior to this one. My daughter LOVES Mercer Mayer books. This book is just one of his wonderful works for children. We enjoy the storyline and the Illustrations, they have always been consistantly superb. This is a daily and nightly routine for us, to read and look at the pictures. She has not EVER had a nightmare! LOL
My daughter is FAR from frightened by these books by M.M.. If anything, they have showed her that "monsters" are not harmful or even real..for that matter. I (very key word here, because as parents WE are responsible for their main influence in everyway) teach her that we must always be alert and aware of our surroundings and the REAL dangers of the World. She is now 3 years old and it is entirely appropriate and FUN!
Also, as for violence and that being the "answer"..WOW!! So far from it. There is not a shred of VIOLENCE! I don't think it points out a wrong or right approach..just one boys! PLEASE, consider this book. You and your child will be glad you did.

5.0 out of 5 stars child loved it, age appropriate, April 16, 2008

My son fears monsters so we got this book. To kids, these monsters are very real no matter what we tell them so that makes this a great story from the child's point of view. He never really sees them, but he "knows" they're there. He learns karate and feels more confident, and the monsters go away. My son loved it, related to it, and felt more confident himself after reading it and discovering that monsters CAN be scared away. He even sleeps in his own bed now!

4.0 out of 5 stars Illustrations should be previewed before purchase, January 6, 2012
Mercer Meyer is a great author whose books are very popular. However, the monster book includes 3 pages illustrated with the little boy in a shower. I would have preferred seeing these illustrations before I purchased the book for an elementary library collection. Otherwise, this is an enjoyable monster story.

"There are monsters everywhere, but I don't care!" Sounds at first like a bad idea for a bedtime story, but in fact, it is great! This is a fun story about a boy who takes karate lessons and so stops being afraid of all the monsters in the world. All three of my kids, the two-year-old girl and five and six-year-old boys LOVE it. It is one we've read so often that I know it by heart. Looking for a great gift? This one is out of the park!

Another book that is beautifully illustrated by Mercer Mayer. Funny but

5.0 out of 5 stars helps kids conquer their fears, December 30, 2009

Great book about a little boy who thinks there are monsters everywhere so he decides to take karate so he can be one up on them. Funny illustrations and really makes light of the kid's monster problem, proving to the young reader/listener that there really isn't anything to be afraid of.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mercer Mayer, June 29, 2009
This review is from: There Are Monsters Everywhere (Hardcover)
This and other books by Mercer Mayer offer a fun and inviting read for young learners. I often use books by Mercer Mayer as Read-Alouds and Think-Alouds and in Making Connections activities. These books are very easy for young learners to connect to as they pertain to common childhood experiences and feelings. Students can also draw connections between Mercer Mayer books about related topics, and later to the larger world. My students LOVE reading them again and again, and the familiar themes engage even the most reluctant readers. Although the text is not what I would call a pattern book, as a re-read, familiar read or shared reading experience, my English Language Learners are particularly enchanted by this book and practice it again and again. I recommend all the other Mercer Mayer classics of the same theme, There's a Nightmare in my Attic, There's an Alligator Under My Bed, etc. Happy Reading!
