Book Description

March 1996 Lesbian and Gay Studies
These personal "coming out" stories from a wide range of young women and men in the UK are divided into three sections: "Coming Out", "Shouting Out" and "Moving On". The stories explore ways to combat the fear many people face before telling their family about their sexuality; the means of expressing pride and helping to fight prejudice; and the process of building strong, lasting relationships with gay friends and partners. A roleplay section is included for groups of friends to work from in developing the ideas and themes of the book.

This review is from: There Must Be 50 Ways to Tell Your Mother (Lesbian and Gay Studies) (Paperback)
Not so much a `how to' manual on coming out, as a collection of those defining moments of coming out, to oneself, and other people. Again and again, I found myself thinking `yes, that's how it is'. The book originated in a cabaret show by Sutcliffe, a performer and drama teacher, and incorporates many of the stories she received from people who had seen the show. As a result, the book has the feel of performance to it: the stories are punchily told, often graphic, full of humour and emotion. Although Sutcliffe's characters are from all over the world, the bulk are British, which makes a refreshing change from the predominantly US-based works which are generally available. This is an excellent book for anyone needing support in coming out, or for anyone trying to understand the feelings of s lesbian, gay or bisexual loved-one.
