The Souls and Adrian Younge are giving you a nice refreshing change in this hip hop game. Live analog instruments, detailed and fresh lyrics, and a very smooth listen. This is a true album that you can listen to front to back. I truly enjoy it.

Souls and Adrian Young are bringing things to another level with "There Is Only Now". This album is surprisingly and refreshingly dope. The concept works, the flow works and S.O.M. shows the rest of the Whack crews how MCing is done. The story-telling is on point and the direction is clear and cinematic. This album is as much visual as it it is lyrical and I find myself putting this purchase in heavy rotation. Needless-to-say, this will get play in the ride. This is the best Souls album since No Man's Land. That Said, 93 Til stands on its own as one of the Classics. I am refreshed and happy to give this album run.

Consistency is the key for the Hiero alumni. Since '93 til Infinity they have continued to come with thought provoking material over numerous solo and group projects. The only minor issue is that they could have mixed up the beats a bit more but I understand the beats followed a conceptual storyline. Overall good album!

The Oakland, California quartet Souls Of Mischief's origins started in elementary school. As two of the founding members entered into high school, they acquired two additional members and ran into Del Tha Funkee Homosapien. He founded the collective the Hierogylphics while still being under the guidance of his cousin Ice Cube. When Del decided to record his sophomore album "No Need For Alarm" with a different sound, the album introduced the group- as well as planting the seeds for the West Coast underground rap scene. The group obtained a deal with Jive Records to release their debut. While it started slow with the first single "That's When Ya Lost", it was the title track "'93 Til Infinity" that put the group on the map. As a result, it made their follow-up become highly anticipated. Unfortunately, a couple of setbacks threatened to derail their path to success. An on-air battle with Hobo Junction member Saafir proved embarrassing for them and sample clearances caused their second album to be pushed back repeatedly. In 1995, they finally released "No Man's Land" and due to the poor reception, they were dropped from Jive. In 1998, they went independent and recorded three albums as part of the Hieroglyphics. They recorded a couple more albums- including 2009's Prince Paul produced "Montezuma's Revenge"- before laying low for the remainder of the 2010's.

In 2014, they got a call from producer Adrian Younge to record a new album. As such, they worked with him on the live instrument and sample-free concept album "There Is Only Now". Nararrated by their onetime labelmate Ali Shaheed Muhammad, the album is set in the past in 1994- several months after the release of "93 Til Infinity". The group deals with a kidnapping which later turns into a revenge tale.

This is a great album and the combination of Adrian Younge with this prolific rap group made this a a resident disc in the CD-changer. Opio, Tajai, and A-plus team with Ali Shaheed Muhammad to make this one listen-worthy every time it is the next disc up. Other albums I would have grown tired of by this point. After buying this, I had to listen to Prhyme as Adrian young appears as a producer on that album featuring DJ Premier. I still feel that this album has a more repeatable-listening quality to it than Prhyme.

This album has its moments where it is very enjoyable. The backing music sounds like live drums, etc. which adds to the creative intrigue. The story of the album is interesting as well. The only drawback is that Souls of Mischief have released better albums than this one so while it is unfair to judge vs. older albums, I can't help but reminded that the Souls of Mischief crew has masterpieces vs this album which renders this album "just okay" vs. "Amazing".

Production production production! What else is there to say? The SOM have always been a solid crew but this album though short, flows like a river. I can listen to it from beginning to end without skipping one track and that says a lot. This one is highly slept on and should be up for rap album of the year.
