An experimental European flavor..., January 10, 2012
This review is from: There Is A Time [LP VINYL] (Vinyl)
There Is A Time is a very heavily French-inspired album - probably because of Liza's then-recent discovery of Charles Aznavour (and subsequent life-long obsession with the man). Two tracks on the album are indeed English versions of Aznavour tunes - firstly the title track, and then "Love At Last You Have Found Me". In addition, several conjure up the atmosphere of the Moulin Rouge itself - ESPECIALLY "One of Those Songs". Others just have a very distinct European flavor to them - for instance, "I (Who Have Nothing)" is an English translation of an old famous Italian song. Other songs, such as "Days of the Waltz", "Ay Marieke", and naturally, "The Parisians" all bring up mental imagery of a romanticized Paris. There is even a subtle nod toward one of her father's films, An American In Paris with "I'll Build A Stairway To Paradise" (sung by the very French Maurice Chevalier in the film). And of course, you've got to love that swinging 60's "Middle of the Street"!
Although I would by no means refer to this album as being definitive in any sense of the term, I would still HIGHLY recommend it!
