5.0 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Documentary, September 7, 2000
By A Customer
I'm a lifelong baseball fan, with a special interest in the Negro Leagues. I consider this the finest baseball documentary I've ever seen. The film exemplifies both technical expertise and great sensitivity to the subject matter. The interview sequence of the Pittsburgh Crawfords legendary outfield of Cool Papa Bell, Jimmie Crutchfield, and Ted Page stands as some of the best baseball footage ever. The director, Craig Davidson, has portrayed life in the shadows of black baseball with great brilliance and I give "There Was Always Sun Shining Someplace" my very highest recommendation.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent video for any baseball fan., October 6, 1999
This video is an extremly good look at the stories of Negro Leaguers. It was great to see the players telling their stories in the flesh, rather than simply reading their printed words.Great images! Recommended highly, especially from a research perspective.

4.0 out of 5 stars A rare view into a bygone era..., July 20, 2005

This review is from: There Was Always Sun Shining Someplace: Life in the Negro Baseball Leagues (DVD)
This film views like a sequel to "only the ball was white" because it uses much of the same footage and interviews the same ball players, and uses much of the same photos as "Only the Ball Was White" ,never the less this film is a must have item for anyone interested in 19th and 20th century black american culture...An excellent reference into the deeper recesses of american racism....

5.0 out of 5 stars A Classic! - Not to be Missed!!!, July 23, 1999
By A Customer
Do you believe in baseball? For many it is the essence of Americana. Unfortunatley, too few amoung us have a living memory of one of the greatest products of 20th century American Culture - the Negro Baseball Leagues. Barnstorming across the country attemping to earn a living by playing "America's Game", these exceptional atheletes, who were second class in social standing only, regularly beat their white major league counterparts in exhibition games. This film contains some of the last live footage of these baseball greats including the legendary Satchel Page. Truly one of the greatest gems of its time - the era of the Negro Baseball Leagues and the character of the men who played in it, are captured here with pathos and insight. More than simply a baseball documentary, this film prortrays a piece of our past that we can all be proud of and of which we should also feel a bit ashamed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful, extremely fun film, August 18, 1999
By A Customer
This film is a wonderful recreation of the Negro Leagues baseball era. It lets the players do the talking, and uses authentic, old-time footage to capture the ambience of the day. For those who love baseball, and for those with an interest in how the civil rights movement evolved, this film is a must-see.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best DVD on The Negro Leagues I have Seen, October 29, 2009

This review is from: There Was Always Sun Shining Someplace: Life in the Negro Baseball Leagues (DVD)
This is the best DVD on the Negro Leagues I have seen. While the video is older (and not as polished), the content is excellent. It features actual interviews with such greats Hall of Famers as Satchel Paige, Cool Poppa Bell, Judy Johnson, Effa Manely, Buck Leonard, and others. One of the oldest, but still best video on the topic. A "most have" for true Negro League fans.
