I am a speech pathologist working with special needs children. I use all of Colandro's Old Lady books in my speech groups. The vocabulary is easy and repetitive and there is always a surprise ending!

5.0 out of 5 stars Familiar Pattern of Text is loved by kiddos. March 6, 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
We love all the old lady book, from There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Bell! to There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bat!. Each "old lady" book is similar in text pattern, but each story is loved and adored by kids ages three to eight. They are always wondering what in the world the old lady will swallow next and why in the world would she swallow the things she does. In this book, the hungry old lady swallows a chick, some straw, an egg, some candy, a basket, and a bow! The patterns of the text makes it easy for a non-reader to follow along and it is easy enough for an early reader to read. This would make a great addition to a child's Easter Basket or a fabulous gift from a classroom teacher to their students before spring break.

1.0 out of 5 stars Blech... May 15, 2013
By Christi
Format:Paperback
Let's just get one thing straight from the start... the little old lady in this story literally vomits up an Easter basket at the end.

There is so much wrong with this book, starting with the fact that it is just more proof that Scholastic is the problem with children's literature and education today, not the solution it claims to be. This story makes no sense. The wording is downright stupid (and that is not a word I use lightly) and it does not reinforce the idea that authors choose their words carefully to tell a story- each word here is merely chosen to enforce a rhyme scheme. There is no attention to meaning. ("She didn't beg to swallow that egg." "Oh what a show when she swallowed that bow.")I flinch each time I read this book to my daughter. Apparently the woman swallows a chick, an egg, some candy, some straw, a basket and a bow and then begins to hop up and down uncontrollably until she bumps into the Easter Bunny causing her to vomit it all back up, nicely reassembled in the form of an Easter Basket. Yum. How festive.

Interestingly, there are several pages where you see nothing but the egg, chick, candy and straw in the woman's "belly" and all I can think is that the straw wiggling along behind the candy next to the egg and the big pink basket looks A LOT like the quintessential sperm-traveling-to-egg pictures from middle school science movies and text books. A pun on the illustrator's part, perhaps? If so, it's the most creative thing in there.
