5.0 out of 5 stars a story of love and friendship
Wow, there was an actual plot to this book and real people you could identify with. I couldn't stop reading and kept turning the pages until two AM. The book was funny and sad and full of hope at the same time. The friendship between Buddy and Chris was wonderful and touching. I will remember this book for a long time and read it again.

2.0 out of 5 stars Was there supposed to be a plot?
I have read other books by this author and really enjoyed them. So imagine my disappointment with this one.

The characters are horribly cardboard. It is almost like the author took every sterotypical crisis, threw them into a pot, and pulled out this book. Plus, the story jumps around so much that you can't get a good feel for any of the characters.

Although Liz's job at the radio station does lead to her meeting Kate, all the other scenes concerning her job could be deleted because they do nothing to advance the plot. (It almost feels like the author included them in order to have some conflict.)

While Chris's illness is central to the story, even that seems forced. She's sick, she gets better, she dies. Her death, although intended to be the climax of the book, is almost glossed over. (Though granted, that could just be because the reader knows Chris is going to die.)

Even the love story is convoluted. The relationship with Liz and Kate is never really developed. Liz spends most of the book sleeping with and claiming to be in love with Kate, but keeps pining over Chris.

Unless you have a lot of free time and a high tolerance for cheesiness, skip this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Story of Love and Friendship, December 17, 2000

This review is from: There Will Be No Goodbyes (Paperback)
Laura DeHart Young writes a wonderfully touching story of love and of a special friendship that doesn't come around very often. Saying goodbye is never easy no matter what the circumstance. It's especially hard when a there is a serious illness. This is a gripping story (keep some kleenex handy) that I guarantee you will enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Young's Best Published Book..., September 5, 2005

Buddie Callow is taking care of her terminally-ill best friend, Chris. Chris has an incurable heart condition. Buddie is reluctant to have a social life because she wants to have as much quality time with Chris as possible. However, one day during an interview for her radio station, Buddie meets the enigmatic Kate McGowan. Although Kate insinuates herself into Buddie's life and befriends Chris, Buddie is unsure about their relationship.

A hopeful medical treatment for Chris improves her health and allows Buddie the freedom to explore things with Kate. However, after she realizes she's in love with Kate, Buddie realizes Kate harbors many skeletons in her closet and may never be able to return her love.

An intense love story with multiple layers, a strong plot with depth, lovable characters with dimensionality, and an artful author make this a wonderful book. Buy it. Read it. Share it with friends. Keep it on your bookshelf for years to come. This is a classic that deserves to be read again and again.

This is the first book to ever make me cry. It's well written and makes you realize you should always take a chance. The book is a quick read though. Just give yourself a couple of hours of uninteruption and you'll be through it.
