Book Description

The first biography of legendary singer/songwriter/composer Rufus Wainwright, There Will Be Rainbows reveals the integrity and complexity of Wainwright’s work while fully embracing the self-deprecating humor, wild flamboyance, and fascinating contradictions that embody Rufus Wainwright, the man. There Will Be Rainbows tells Wainwright unforgettable true story—a classic tale of sex, drugs, and rock n’ roll, with many an unexpected Wainwright-esque twist.

3.0 out of 5 stars Academic Wainwright July 22, 2010
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This biography is well resaerched, too well researched perhaps to the point I feel I am taking a class upon which I will be graded rather than reading a book for enjoyment. It arrived promptly though and in excellent condition. I have learned more about Rufus Wainwright than I did before but have to wade through a lot of backgrouond first.

5.0 out of 5 stars More than what it says on the tin November 9, 2010
Format:Paperback
I originally bought this book in hardcover in London last year. I bought this paperback for the updated material on the opera. I see that the UK paperback is now subtitled "and the story of Loudon Wainwright and Kate McGarrigle". That's a more accurate summary of the book. It is not just about Rufus but about his extended family. I welcomed this approach. This is one of the best rock biographies I have read. The author is prepared to dissect and deconstruct the music and explains what, in his opinion, works and what doesn't. I disagreed on a few points, I thought the Judy Garland shows were a triumph and the opera was a failure. The author has the opposite view. That said anybody that takes the time to weave the Wainwright family through the Brontes, a big cat in the Chelsea Hotel and Ted Danson from Cheers has obviously done his homework and its fascinating to follow their story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not Just For Rufus Wainwright Fans... September 19, 2010
Format:Paperback
I loved this book. It was bright, witty and full of inside information on Rufus and the entire Wainwright gang. In response to the other reviews saying it was academic, well perhaps it isn't a light and fluffy easy read. But then neither is Rufus just another moronic pop singer. I thought the book got the tone just right. The more I read the more I was drawn in. Two thumbs up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Creative people are fascinating July 7, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Rufus Wainwright's performing is so elegant and loving the McGarrigle Sisters and Loudon Wainwright,III I totally enjoyed reading this book. The musical journeys of Rufus and others in his very creative family make better reading than any novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great biography March 1, 2013

This was highly informative and a pleasure to read. I usually find biographies to be lifeless and dull. This one was not.
