I Walk The Line

Biography

Beginning his career as an outlaw to the Nashville establishment, Johnny Cash has come to define country music over the last 40 years. At first, his unique mix of hillbilly music with gospel and blues made him a perfect fit at Sam Phillips' Sun records, where he recorded such classics as "Folsom Prison Blues" and "I Walk The Line." From there, Johnny signed with Columbia records and embarked on… Read more in Amazon's Johnny Cash Store

5.0 out of 5 stars great disc - poor value, May 24, 2006
This review is from: There You Go (Audio CD)
"There You Go" is a great compilation of Johnny Cash's early material. Many classics are here from 'Hey Porter' and 'Get Rhythm' to 'Folsom Prison Blues' and the title track. In other words, this disc features songs from Johnny's Sun Records period. "There You Go" is not an official Johnny Cash release; this Pegasus compilation is an import featuring previously released material. It seems out-of-print and for good reason. For less money, the listener can get most of this music on "The Essential Johnny Cash" (Sony 2002) and the remaining songs can mostly be found on "All Aboard the Blue Train." At the time of review, the least expensive version of "There You Go" was going for $38.00 while a new copy of the two disc "The Essential Johnny Cash" could be purchased for $15.97. "There You Go" does have some rare tunes including 'You're The Nearest Thing To Heaven,' 'Down The Street To 301' and Hanks Williams' 'I Heard That Lonesome Whistle Blow.' Mostly, these are songs that weren't strong enough to be singles and casual fans can live without them. For what it is, "There You Go" is a great disc featuring Johnny's early material -it's just not a good value considering that the music can be found elsewhere for less money.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Still Miss Someone - Johnny Cash, July 20, 2010

This review is from: There You Go (Audio CD)
There was only one Johnny Cash, to me, the Elvis of the country music world. This album is one of his very earliest if not the first one. In my Cash collection, I still didn't have "There You Go", the first-ever song I heard by him. It was on a Sun labelled 78-rpm record at my grandmother's house in Kansas City. For years, I even forgot about that song until it came to mind out of the blue - or should I say black - and looked for it in my collection. No such animal. I found this CD, ordered it immediately and got it in quick order and in perfect condition. Once again, Cash was worth my cash. I feel that my Cash collection is complete now. I can't help but wonder why the 3-disk box set I got a few years ago didn't have "There You Go." Such a shame, but I have it now. All is well in the household.
