AN INFLUENTIAL APOLOGETICS WORK, February 18, 2010
This review is from: Therefore, stand;: Christian apologetics (Paperback)
Wilbur Moorehead Smith taught at Moody Bible Institute for ten years, and was a professor at Fuller Theological Seminary until his retirement in 1963. He was also the one who suggested to Bill Bright the name "Campus Crusade for Christ" for his organization. (Smith was one of Bright's professors at Fuller.)
This 1945 book (which was also recommended by Josh McDowell in his famous book,
Evidence That Demands a Verdict) states in the Preface, "The main purpose which the author of this work has had in mind throughout its writing is that from its perusal some of the present generation of young men, whose faith in God and in the Bible has been shaken or destroyed, by the years spent in collegiate institutions and universities where the Christian faith is under constant attack and ridicule, and those who have come under the power of the spirit of skepticism and irreligiousness of our present unbelieving age, might be persuaded to consider fairly, without prejudice, as they would any subject offered in college, the evidences which support and confirm the great elemental truths of the Christian faith, and find, in this reconsideration, or perhaps new consideration, a solid foundation on which a real and abiding faith might be built."
The book includes chapters such as, "The Continuing Retreat of Evangelical Protestantism," "The Pessimism of our Contemporary Skeptics," "The Resurrection of Christ from the Dead," and "A Righteous Judgment to Come."
In the fashion of older books, Smith's work is more "wordy" and less concisely-stated than, say, Josh McDowell. But it nevertheless remains of interest for students of apologetics and its history.
