5.0 out of 5 stars Great self-help book for professionals and those in therapy
Excellent, hopeful book: very easy to read and clear. Written with compassion and dedication. Carefully examines Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, psychodynamic influences, medication, and spirituality making a cogent case for an integrative approach.

Highly recommend to therapists and clients.

2.0 out of 5 stars too vague and interventions undefined
I came away from reading this book with few, if any, concrete interventions to employ. 5.0 out of 5 stars ALWAYS INTERESTED IN HOW PSYCHOTHERAPY COINCIDES WITH SPIRITUALITY, July 15, 2006
This review is from: There's Always Help; There's Always Hope: An Award-Winning Psychiatrist Shows You How to Heal Your Body, Mind, and Spirit (Paperback)
Dr.Wood, M.D. gives hope to those who enter therapy with the idea that spirituality and hope is there for us to be found with the help of the counselor/therapist. I especially liked the idea that one should as the patient get in touch with the feelings I am feeling rather than have a negative or flat affect on my face. Or like smiling while inside I am crying my mind out. The pages in her book which list many emotions brought tears to my eyes. I had never got into touch with the real me before reading this book and discussing it with my psychotherapist/psychologist. I have already ordered both of Dr.Wood's upcoming new books. (And one is even in May 2007 due to be out!)

I came away from reading this book with few, if any, concrete interventions to employ. Her theory or approach is not all that different from that of many therapists having written their own self-help books, but unlike these other authors who might discuss meditation or physical exercise, for example, as active interventions to promote body well-being, Ms. Wood merely hints at the pathway to accomplishing this. I finished the book feeling frustrated at having learned nothing new or specific.

The author is too mainstream and unimaginative in her views, quoting presently accepted diagnoses and promoting the use of pharmaceuticals. I believe drugs have an important role to play in treatment of emotional difficulties, but balk at the over-reliance on psych diagnoses to prescribe treatment instead of treating the patient as an individual who may not be so easily lumped into a category.

The title of this book is probably one of the main influences for my having purchased it, but I found no hope or help here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, January 11, 2011
This review is from: There's Always Help; There's Always Hope: An Award-Winning Psychiatrist Shows You How to Heal Your Body, Mind, and Spirit (Paperback)
Ignore that negative review. The wonderful thing about this book is that the therapist co-wrote it with her patients. One of the things she hated about her psychiatry training is the low expectation that people would actually be cured. The patients who contributed to the book were people with extreme, often multi-afflictions who had actually been CURED. In these circumstances the criticism that it is old-fashioned and so on seems rather irrelevant. This is a wonderful, supportive, compassionate book.

I was so impressed with this book, that I purchased a few copies for the people in my life so they could understand my personal healing goals. Dr. Eve A. Wood shows a path for a person to follow to feel better. No one can do the work necessary to heal themselves without a mentor, psychiatrist, or therapist. This book can put you well on your way, along with professional assistance. Dr. Eve A. Wood understands, and comes across as very empathetic and knowledgeable in this book. I would recommend this book for anyone interested in healing your Body, Mind or Spririt.
