Book Description

1 and up
Gladys Edmunds always exceeded expectations. At age twelve, she was desperate for a pair of Buster Brown saddle shoes and formed her own cleaning business to pay for them. Three years later, with a baby on the way, she realized she could charter tour buses to make great profits. From the card table in her childhood living room to Money magazine's small business round table, Edmunds has done it all. But how, exactly, did she do it?

Edmunds presents the steps to success in accessible, inspirational, often humorous ways. They are uncomplicated but challenging; proactive as well as reactive; tried and definitely true. She identifies the six tasks necessary for achieving entrepreneurial rewards: take charge of your thoughts, overcome obstacles, establish communication, build a dynamic support system, achieve balance, and expand your horizons. Through personal example and anecdote, how-to advice and exercises readers will learn how to use the six keys to open the door to a future they might have never dreamed possible. After all, there is no business like your own business.

5.0 out of 5 stars Want to Start a Business? Read This First!, March 9, 2000

This review is from: There's No Business Like Your Own Business : Six Practical and Holistic Steps to Entrepreneurial Success (Hardcover)
Whether you own a small business, are thinking about starting one or would just like to improve the quality of your life, this is a book you should read -- right now. It's chock full of common sense imparted to the reader by a woman whose phenomenal success speaks for itself. When you read how Gladys Edmunds, at the age of twelve, began using her spunk and imagination to put her on the road to riches in the travel industry, you come away thinking: Doggone it - if she can do it, I can, too! A combination of fascinating anecdotes about Edmunds' own life and instructive case histories of people who have sought and benefited from her counsel, 'There's No Business Like Your Own Business' is not the usual dry-as-dust business primer, but rather an encouraging, easy-to-read look at how it is possible, by managing ourselves, to manage our businesses and our lives, and that they should not be mutually exclusive. We are reminded that we needn't try to do it alone, and that it's a sign of wisdom, not inadequacy, to enlist help from others. 'There's No Business Like Your Own Business' is peppered with nuggets of wisdom from the ancients to the modern. Don't even think about starting a business until you've read what Edmunds has to say.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Self-Employment Bible, February 21, 2001

This review is from: There's No Business Like Your Own Business : Six Practical and Holistic Steps to Entrepreneurial Success (Hardcover)
Having been a victim of corporate downsizing, making the leap into starting my own business was made easier through this no-nonsense, highly practical and strongly inspirational book, written by Gladys Edmunds. It can be a scary proposition, moving into self-employment after a 20-year career inside corporations, but reading not only about Gladys' own story but the scores of real-life examples of others she describes, proves that it can be done. I have gone back to her book time and time again for insight and inspiration, and I have yet to be disappointed.
