2 thumbs up to Spinelli!,
This review is from: There's a Girl in My Hammerlock (Paperback)
I read this book soley for the reason I needed someone to related to. I'm a female wrestler (last year was my first year) and I was never so happy as when I found this book! It was such a great book! It dealt with the real problems of a young teen, without getting to soap oprahish... I recommend all young girls and guys read this book. It kind of helps put an end to stereotypes.

I really liked this book!,

This was a great book because it appealed to every kind of reader. It had suspense, romance, violence (to a certain degree), and humor. At first when I started reading this book, I thought it was just going to be about some wrestler who has a hard time. However, the author really does a good job of putting you in the main characters place. She also used very descriptive words that gave you a mental picture of what was going on in the story. If I had to recommend one book I would recommend There's a Girl in my Hammerlock by Jerry Spinneli because I know it would entertain whatever style of reading that person had. The genre of this book was contemporary realism.

Challenging the System,

This review is from: There's a Girl in My Hammerlock (Paperback)
Maisie Potter has a huge crush on Eric Delong. It developed over the summer when they bumped into each other in a pool. Unfortunately, he is dating Liz, an evil cheerleader. Maisie decides to do whatever she can to get his attention, so she tries out for cheerleading. She is cut from the team. When winter season arrives, Maisie doesn't try out for basketball, which she played the year before. Instead, she is the only girl to try out for wrestling--the team Eric is on. Maisie soon learns that there's a lot more to wrestling than she's seen on television. As Maisie discovers that she actually likes the sport of wrestling and it's no longer all about getting Eric's attention, she also realizes something awful--everyone seems to be against her. Her coach doesn't seem to want her on his team, her teammates don't accept her and they treat her badly, the fans seem to be rooting against her, and the boys from other schools who are supposed to wrestle her in competitions forfeit the matches, giving her an automatic win in order to avoid wrestling her. It started off as just something to get a boy's attention, but when things get really tough will Maisie actually stick with the team? I liked that this book didn't have the classic happy ending. As a result of her decisions Maisie didn't end up getting everything she ever wanted, but she seemed to be satisfied. I really liked Maisie's parents and the way they treated her and her siblings. I found that many of the characters were far too predictable, though. There were few who were able to surprise me.

There's A Girl In My Hammerlock,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: There's a Girl in My Hammerlock (Paperback)
There's A Girl In My Hammerlock is written by Jerry Spinelli. The publisher is Half Moon Books. It is about a girl named Maisie who tries out for the cheer squad, but doesn't make it. Then to get a little closer to Eric Delong, she goes out for the wrestling team and makes it, despite everyone really dsen't want her to. The main characters are Maisie a girl who strives for what she wants, Eric, Liz's boyfriend, Liz, a true cheerleader, her family, the wrestling team and finally Tank, P.K Maisie's litlle sister's best bud. There was a little suspense. For example, how was Maisie going to do on the wresting team? Exacly how close was she going to get to Eric? I would like to recommend this book because it tells how Maisie had courage and struggled to get her way even though it was hard, as a woman.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: There's a Girl in My Hammerlock (Paperback)
~There's A Girl In My Hammerlock~How would I describe it? I could describe it as many things but the top reasons are that it made me think and wonder, and also makes me want to write my own book. Best of all it made me read, read, and read. The title sounded very wierd, but the moment I saw this book I said,"I can't believe that I am going to read this book." When I was done reading the book,I said to myself, "This book was the best book ever." I also said,"That saying is right. You can't judge a book by the cover." You just have to get your hands on THIS BOOK! The cover isn't the best thing ever, but the book is! Go to library now and check out this book. You will have this book forever, even in your dreams. I know I will. If you like to be outside a lot or eat dinner, well, you are not going to have time anymore for that. You will read, read, read! This book needs those five stars. If the stare would go higher I would rate it 100 if there was such a thing, and a Newbery medal! Pick this book up NOW!!!!!!

Great Wrestling Book,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: There's a Girl in My Hammerlock (Paperback)
My review on this book is a pretty good review. This book wouldn't exactly be my first choice, but it was a good book. If you were into wrestling I would highly recomend this book. It has a lot of wrestling moves and some terms listed. There are some funny parts as well. I would not recomend this book to children under 5th grade and would strongly suggest that you would at least be 10 or 11. This is a good book and I highly suggest it.

There's a Girl in my Hammerlock,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: There's a Girl in My Hammerlock (School & Library Binding)
In There's a Girl in my Hammerlock, many exciting things happen. First, Maisie Potter tries out for the cheer squad because Liz's boyfriend, Eric is in a way part of it. Maisie wants to get closer to him. Then she finds out that he is on the wrestling team so she tries out too. She gets embarrassed, and worse she has to do monkey rolls by herself. She gets tortured, kissed and wins her first wrestling match. I would reccomend this book to anybody who likes page turners.

One problem is the head cheerleader also likes Eric. Maisie decides to stay on the wrestling team, but she notices that she startes to lose all her friends. Maisie as usual is not going to get Eric but they still remain friends with each other. This book is very good for both boys and girls and you should read this book if you like sports and a little bit of romance mixed together!!
