Clean, Pure Bluegrass Gospel,
By Joseph Kim (Lancaster, PA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: There's a Light Guiding Me (Audio CD)
Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver are known for their tight harmony and creative arrangements of gospel songs. This album is one of their best. Musically, the bluegrass sound is flawless, and the song choices are thoughtful and inspirational. "There Is a God" is my favorite cut, and worth the price of the CD by itself. The sincerity of the singers comes through clearly, and makes this one CD I never tire of hearing.

The normal instrumentation of Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver is always excellent quality. However, their harmonies, timbre, pathos and modulation are 'state of the art' in country music. This album is 'spot-on!' Commonly, bluegrass music endures some pretty horrific displays. Thankfully, it has it's excellence as well. Doyle Lawson has pursued this and accomplished standards surely outlasting himself. No higher praise can be given. "There's a Light Guiding Me" is a great addition to his long line of credits. I like his music, I like what it says and I love who it honors.

Great CD and an ironic twist: I've been a music fan for a long time, but had actually never heard of this group. Growing up in Alabama, the "old school" church I thank God I was raised in had traditional Gospel songs in the services and that's the kind I've always liked. One day, my dad(also a big music fan with what I'd estimate at 4,000 CD's in his collection) asked if I'd heard "There Is a God". I hadn't, but told him I'd track down the CD and get it (still not in the iTunes way of life). I got this CD for that song alone, but I've almost worn it out playing the rest of the disc as well. Roughly 1/2 the disc a cappella and 1/2 with musical accompaniment- but all great songs. And the ironic twist? My dad isn't a Christian. He's a member of some Eastern Indian faith that I can neither explain to folks nor comprehend. But he suggested "There Is A God" to me.
