I think it would be good supplemental reading for folks early into their recovery. It's OK reading for old timers.

This is a "must read" book for couples in recovery. In fact, despite the title, any couple can benefit from the wisdom contained in its pages. Dr. Paul, as many know, authored the original "Page 449" sentiments found in the third edition of "Alcoholics Anonymous" (also known as the "Big Book" of A.A.). In this book he expands his thoughts and intentions to cover the way he and his wife of 55 years incorporated the principles and traditions of the A.A. way of life into their relationship.

This is a book that must be sampled a paragraph at a time; written in such a way that significant topics are brought up in a "plain speaking" way, this is a terrific book to be used as a "study guide." Couples can each read a paragraph and then discuss the ideas and concepts contained in the reading.

The chapters devoted to emotional sobriety and interpersonal communication are alone worth the price of the book. Dr. Paul's writing style is simple, straight-forward and utterly human. He uses his own experiences to describe the many pitfalls and missteps on the way to determining the best methods for developing strong, mutually beneficial relationships.

The title of the book is itself, loaded with meaning. But even if your life hasn't been affected by addiction (and recovery), this little book can make a tremendous difference in how you (and your significant other) relate to the rest of the world and each other.

5.0 out of 5 stars There's More to Quitting Drinking Than Quitting Drinking, August 22, 2005
This review is from: There's More to Quitting Drinking Than Quitting Drinking (Paperback)
Dr. Paul probably had more information on alcoholism and drug addiction than anyone on the planet, including the founders of AA. His information on the 12 Steps, a Higher Power and the phases he went through are more than helpful to people having a difficult time identifying their problems. I recommend this book to anyone not only having an addiction or drinking problem, but also anyone knowing or caring for someone with same.

Outstanding recovery book. Definitely deserving of a second and third read, every other year or so. Really helped me becasue I could relate, especially in the "family" aspect. Buy another copy to give away because your copy will be full of highlights!

This book clearly explains the sickness of alchoholism and how to deal with someone who suffers from this disease. It assisted me in making some very important decisions and changes in my life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, May 12, 2007
This review is from: There's More to Quitting Drinking Than Quitting Drinking (Paperback)
This book was the next logical step in the pursuit of long term recovery and the work necessary for the individuals seeking a deeper understanding of alcoholism and it's relation to daily living once sobriety is underway. Dr Paul O. sights many additioinal resources that the reader may find helpful and enlightening for their own personal journey. Many of us will realize in a very short period of time that there IS more to quitting drinking than just the physical aspects of being sober or not taking that next drink. You will find that here.

5.0 out of 5 stars We miss him!, February 22, 2010
This review is from: There's More to Quitting Drinking Than Quitting Drinking (Paperback)
It was always wonderful to sit in a meeting and listen to (and of course later hug) the fabled man behind "Doctor, Alcoholic, Addict" still remaining in the textbook Alcoholic Anonymous in its fourth edition (even if his most often quoted paragraph on Acceptance is not on page 449, LOL).

This book (and his later one) remain as cornerstones to not only recovery from addition, but also living a truly spiritual life in general, for anyone. Such is the nature of the beast, the reason for more than one hundred different types "twelve step" programs apart from AA around the world today.

It is impossible for me to write accolades for this book, however good I make it sound is simply not enough. It is my personal favorite, bar none. As one would expect from our beloved Dr. Paul, it is a true delight to read and use, full of humor and superbly complete yet concise.

We will always miss this man. Thank God he left us his two books.

If you like "Acceptance is the Answer" than you'll love this. Practical tools for sober living. If you are looking to continue to kick your recovery up to the next level then I highly recommend this book. Well worth the investment. I am already receiving huge benefits. Outstanding!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dr Paul is awesome, August 17, 2009
This review is from: There's More to Quitting Drinking Than Quitting Drinking (Paperback)
Just like his story in the Big Book of AA Dr Paul is witty, funny and deadly serious all at the same time. His analysis and solutions for the alcoholic conditions and behaviors are spot on. This book is a keeper! Whether you are in AA or not this book is worth reading.

Whether you are the spouse or family member of an alcoholic, the adult child of an alcoholic, someone who thinks they may suffer from alcoholism, or a professed alcoholic, don't pass this book up. You won't be sorry you read it. Dr. Paul O also has a story in the Big Book. His wisdom is offered in an honest, witty format and explains what few really understand about alcoholism...it is a disease of "thinking." As the spouse of an alcoholic I recommend you buy it now, read it, and then pass it to anyone in your family to read. Soon you will all be talking about the book and the alcoholic will want to read it, too!
