4.0 out of 5 stars Nothing new, but many oldies and goodies
If you already own Before the Beach, American Storyteller, or High Cumberland Jubilee and Down to Earth, you already own this CD. This album contains his very early work. If you want his overplayed songs that everyone knows, this CD is not for you (and you would be better off buying Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays), however this CD is great to add to your existing...

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed this time
I am a huge Buffett Fan, I have seen him every year for the last 10 years. This Album is too country, I was expecting something more Fun! If you're a die-hard Fan, buy it for your collection, otherwise buy Live Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays

A must for the die hard parrotheads.

3.0 out of 5 stars Parrothead looks at Jimmy, December 9, 2004
This review is from: There's Nothing Soft About Hard Times (Audio CD)
This is all old Nashville era stuff. Jimmy hadn't found himself and was struggling to be what Nashville wanted. If you want to get an idea of what that struggle sounded like, buy this album. If you are a big fan of Volcano and Son of a Sailor era Buffett, take a pass.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Quite a Parrothead's Dream, But Still Good!, June 25, 2000
This review is from: There's Nothing Soft About Hard Times (Audio CD)
This is a standard Jimmy Buffet album, not much special. Some of the songs I enjoyed very much, like Captain America, while others didn't do much for me, such as Ain't He A Genius? I wouldn't recommend unless you are a true Parrothead.

2.0 out of 5 stars If you don't have Down to Earth and High Cumberland Jubilee, June 16, 2000
This album is the same as Down to Earth and High Cumberland Jubilee and was already previewed in the Before the Beach compilation

4.0 out of 5 stars Read the book, then you'll understand...., December 30, 2003

For those initially turned off by this album, I suggest reading Jimmy Buffett's autobiography, titled, A Pirate Looks at Fifty. Many of the stories in the book put a timeframe around this album. Buffett hasn't always written caribbean rock and roll music!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good album, Great price, October 1, 2001
If you like Buffet, you'll like this album, but if you like some great country sounding tunes you may or may not have ever heard before, you might just love this album. These are definately not the hugely popular, overplayed Buffet classics, but they are some well written and performed songs that I really enjoy. Its nice to not know the words to every song on an album, isn't it? Plus, you'll still get some of the same laid back Buffet chords in almost every song, and you'll still find yourself in your own little laid back world, even if you're dreaming of the Appalachains instead of old, sunburnt fishermen living in the Keys. Try it out; its a darn good value, at least!

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic Buffett, April 24, 2000
By A Customer
"There's Nothing Soft About Hard Times" Is what I would cosider a must for any true fan of Jimmy Buffett. But, before buying this album I would suggest that you listen to all of the sound clips of it that you can find, because this is not an average Buffett album. For example, it has more of a country/appalachian sound to it, not the carrabian style that almost all parrot heads have come to love. So remember, listen to all of the sound clips of it that you possibly can before buying, but I'm almost positive that you will enjoy it after purchasing.

1.0 out of 5 stars If you love Jimmy Buffet You'll Hate this CD, July 14, 2003
This review is from: There's Nothing Soft About Hard Times (Audio CD)
When I first listened to this cd I thought it was a pirate imposter. It is horrible. I checked the internet to see if it was really a cd by Jimmy Buffet. Unfortunately, it is.

I have been listening to Jimmy Buffet since 1975 and this just is not him. Gone are all of the island style sounds. The captain and the Kid sounds like a terrible amature talent show. Save your money and save your love for Jimmy, don't buy this cd! It's worth less than an AOL cd.
